Artizan Gallery

Artizan Gallery Gallery - Café - Venue I was sure that here in the Bay we probably had a similar abundance of creative talent but where was it, how to find it?

I have lived in Torbay since 1997 and have always had a love for art in all of its forms and if I wanted an ‘art fix’ I would generally head for St Ives, a place synonymous with art. What was it that places like St Ives had that we were lacking? What is stopping Torbay being for Devon what St Ives is for Cornwall? I attended an ‘Open Space’ event in 2012 to try and get answers to some of these que

stions – ‘What is Torbay’s Cultural Future?’ Out of that event was borne Torbay Action for Art and from that has come this personal adventure that is Artizan Gallery. I have taken my inspiration from places like Birdwood House in Totnes and TAAG in Teignmouth. My aim is to offer affordable space to artists either running solo exhibitions or working in collaboration with other artists. Exhibitions can run for up to 4 weeks, giving time for repeat visits but also creating a changing space so people always want to come back for more and to see what’s new. The gallery will be fully stewarded giving artists the freedom to come and go as they please. In addition to the gallery there will be a small cafe and some workshop space that can be rented by the hour, for the morning, afternoon or evening. I hope that Artizan will become part of the jig-saw that puts Torbay on the art map for Devon and the South West so please get in touch if you too would like to be involved.

"Mokulito is a Japanese originating
lithography method developed in the
1970s by Seishi Ozaku which replaces the
traditional stone plate with a sanded and
smoothed wood. It has since been
developed extensively by Ewa Budka who
has exploited the opportunity of the plate
material to incorporate woodcut to create
a combined technique."

"Commonly associated with garment printing or otherwise as an artform popularised by Andy Warhol, screenprinting has existed as a printmaking method since China’s Song Dynasty (960-1279AD). Its early popularity was limited due to difficulty in trading silk required for early printing screens, and subsequently because of the harshness of the substances required for certain techniques, but the contemporary affordability of the materials required along with its adoption by the popular culture aesthetic, means today it has had a ubiquitous influence on artistic tastes."

Here are two screenprints from artist Graham Black, featuring in our Contemporary British Printmakers exhibition.

"This 18th century medium has gone on to be the basis of most modern-day mass printing techniques, but as an original hand produced art form (that is still very much alive today) it is a meticulous and multistage process reliant on opposing hydrophobic and hydrophilic treatments of a traditionally limestone plate. The demanding process historically relied on master printers who would execute the lithographs of artists, and because of this lithography often took place in geographic centres where these printers established themselves."

"Photogravure is a unique form of printmaking that finds its origins with early photography. It draws together a complex array of etching, darkroom, and even mezzotinting techniques to produce photographic results with plates that could be printed using traditional methods. Its recent popularity has grown due to the development of techniques that allow the transferring of originally digital images into a print medium."

Alps in 1956 as he became the primary
disseminator of the method. As a
printmaking technique, it grew alongside
collage as an art form, with the term
literally translating as “glue drawing”,
referring to the process of building the
printing plate through the construction of
layered materials."

"Unlike many other intaglio or relief methods, monotyping is non-destructive to the worked plate, with inks or painting materials being applied on top of a non-absorbent surface for subsequent application to an absorbent surface that becomes the final work. Because of this, what would traditionally be achieved by a plate is held in the printing substance itself, resulting in it being removed in the act of running the print. As such, monotypes as the name suggests, produce a single original work."

"Linoprint is a modern evolution of some of the most traditional forms of relief printmaking, enabled by the invention of linoleum as a floor covering. Because of the ease with which this material could be carved as a plate, it was popularised in education settings as an entry point to other relief methods such as woodcut. But the uniqueness of this modern material offered new artistic effects, which led to its appeal and use by artists including Chagall, Miró and Kandinsky amongst many others."

"For a time, it seemed etching may have been destined for obscurity as an artform, its early originators in Germany and Italy abandoning it for other mediums. In this period, it became the practice largely of engravers who were versed in other crafts but were not traditionally artists in their own right. It was only the much later demand for reproductive and commercial printmaking that created the space for the practicalities of the technique to be explored, and from here it was adopted by artists such as Rembrandt who would evolve it from reproductive technique to the art form we recognise today."

Another Summer Open Exhibition has crept up on us and whilst it's not quite the tenth we have been running venues in Torbay for 10 years now!

We're getting ready for the reset next week and trying to ignore the fact that we'll be doing so with media coverage of the general election being the only distraction! But who knows, maybe come launch night on Saturday, we'll have even more reasons to celebrate 😉

We'd love for as many of you as possible to come and join us to help kick off the Summer and launch the exhibition, and to make sure it's an enjoyable evening for all, we'll be asking you to give us a rough idea of when you might join by booking either the first or second hour of the event. This doesn't mean we'll kick you out if you arrive early or overstay your welcome, but it does allow us to get a bit of an idea of how busy we'll be (and how many bottles of Pimm's we'll need!)

And if you needed any more incentive to register, we'll also be doing a prize draw with the chance to win £150 to spend at our Summer exhibition when you book in advance!

For full details and to book your tickets, head on over to https://art-hub.co.uk/erso24pv or check the link in our bio

"Woodcut is the oldest technique of the old master printers and is responsible for possibly the first Western art sales boom as cheap woodcuts of varying qualities became popular in a range of settings in the 15th century. The evolutions of the technique were consistently to be found in China, with colour techniques originating here in a style that remains highly recognisable today."

Lynette Taylor brings some examples of the practice to Contemporary British Printmakers, on display until the end of July at Artizan Gallery Lucius Street.

We're excited to be partnering with Torre Abbey as part of our Geopark Residencies programme funded by the Local Heritage Grant Scheme, to help them share the Abbey's story.

"We want to create an engaging visitor experience which draws together, and goes some way to explain, the heritage of Torre Abbey, the UNESCO Geopark within which it sits and the current restoration works. This will not only seek to increase emotional connection with the story behind the conservation work but compliment and work alongside the disruption of the current building site and conservation work. This is an opportunity to explore and interpret the questions of ‘what happens when nature takes over’, ‘what threatens the survival of Torre Abbey’ and ‘What will happen if we don’t intervene’.

The Abbey is the best-preserved example of a medieval monastery in Devon and Cornwall. It also has one of the five most complete early medieval barns in England.

The collection reflects its history and archaeology, including a nationally and regionally important art collection including work by the pre-Raphaelites and other 19th Century, artists and sculptors. The garden has an important collection of botanical specimens and a Hartley Clear Span palm house.

Artists will be encouraged to create atmospheric and immersive work which will go on display in our lift shaft gallery space. There is space for work to be mounted on the walls and there is possibility of an installation piece which could hang in the void space between the medieval walls and the later additions to the mansion house. Suggested interventions include projections, shadow and light and bringing elements of the landscape inside, explaining why it is important to try and harness the damage being caused by the elements. "The carborundum collagraph is a relatively
young form of printmaking with its origins
found in the production of lithography,
carborundum having been used to grind
down the stone plates used in this process. It
was pioneered by French-American artist
Henri Goetz in the 1960s with it being his
exclusive practice from 1969 onwards resulting
in it becoming termed the “Goetz Process”.

Others including Miró, Clavé and Tàpies went
on to utilise the method in their work. The
process relies on the adhering of carborundum
powder to an engraving plate, the fine dust
creating a textured surface for inking and
enabling the generation of halftones."

"The Mezzotint was the first printmaking process to yield tonality, which combined with its high ink retaining plates enabled the creation of luxuriously rich works that made it popular for early portraiture. For a time, it primarily became a tool for the reproduction of other works, with British Mezzotint collecting being popularised as a means of obtaining versions of works hung in the Royal Academy."

Contemporary British Printmakers 2024 returns on Thursday at Artizan Gallery, Lucius Street.

"From woodcut to etching, lithography to mezzotint, monotyping to mokulito, the variety and diversity of printmaking techniques makes it a near endlessly explorable art form, and one that has defined trends and tastes for centuries. As a practice and craft, it owes much of this evolution to the dialogue that grew between those that pursued its practical use as a tool for reproducing text and image, and the artists that sought to exploit the opportunities this bore for their own creative expression."

"Today, the spidering and innumerable tributaries that the practice has taken, lend their successes both to the worlds of modern publishing and printing, and to one of the most exciting art markets of the 21st century."

"Contemporary British Printmakers 2024 is the inaugural exhibition curated by Aritzan Collective, on behalf of Delamore Arts. It brings together 22 printmakers from across the UK, showcasing 80 original works and exploring 11 techniques that span over a thousand years of the artform."

Discover the exhibition until the end of July.

Have you checked out the "Get the Facts" page on the National Museum of Women in the Arts website?

They share a wealth of knowledge to continue the conversation on inequity in the arts as a reminder that we're not as far along the journey as many would like to think we are...

"The truth is that women have never been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses. Counting and quantifying won’t solve discrimination, but statistics are useful for understanding the scope of the problem."

As NMWA Director Susan Fisher Sterling says, “People in the art world want to think we are achieving parity more quickly than we are.”

The Artizan Women's Open exhibition continues to until the end of the month as we play our small part in raising the profile of this important conversation.

Artizan Gallery is pleased to be able to offer four new artist residency programmes for 2024 as part of a piece of work to create new collections responding to the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark (ERUGGP) designation, and the significance of this relationship to Torre Abbey and its current restoration works.

Running in two strands, the residencies will each offer a resource grant and month long studio hosting either at Torre Abbey in their Learning Lab or at one of Artizan Collective’s two Torquay spaces.

This programme is funded as part of the Torbay Local Heritage Grant Scheme by Torbay Culture via National Lottery Heritage Fund Investment, and is additionally supported by Museum Estate Development Fund using public funds by Arts Council England, the Cultural Assets Fund (CAF); a government funding stream, administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF), to protect treasured heritage assets in England from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic alongside match funding from Torbay Council and the Friends of Torre Abbey (FOTA).

Full information about the opportunity can be found at art-hub.co.uk/geoparkresidencies and the deadline for submissions is Midnight, July 5th.

OFFER
The programme is looking to appoint four artists and give them each the opportunity to produce a new body of work responding to the residency themes. Included in the offer is:

- A month-long studio placement with Artizan Collective CIC or Torre Abbey
- A £1,000.00 support grant for producing the work
- Participation in a showcase event at Artizan Collective Gallery (and additionally at Torre Abbey within that strand)
- Opportunity for work to be included within ERUGGPs long term approach to tell the story of our Geopark on a local, national and international stage
- Opportunity to be recognised as a Geopark Ambassador Artist

Art of an Election…

Have you seen or are you doing any great art in response to the general election and the campaigns?

With the Conservatives making campaign shambles an art form in its own right, and some of the Liberal Democrat publicity stunts resembling performance art, it got us wondering “where is art” in the 2024 UK General Election and beyond…

And we discovered a centuries long tradition of documenting elections, campaigning and voting…

Contemporary arts organisations dissecting party manifestos on issues effecting creative industries…

The Guardian going hand made in their branding for election reporting…

And the appointment of photographer Joanne Coates as the official UK Election Artist for 2024!

But we think there’s more to find, so have you seen anything out there from your creative contemporaries that’s getting you and others inspired to vote?

Let us know!

What an incredible Summer warm up we’ve had through May and June! As we set off to Delamore, back on the English Riviera we celebrated women artists, as over the last two months we’ve revisited our newest annual open exhibition as well as two female-led solo shows which engaged with the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.

As with last year, it’s proven to be a vital conversation to share with audiences as we celebrate the contribution of women in the arts and remind ourselves of the progress that still needs to be made in so many walks of life.

Make sure to visit the exhibition before the close June 30th, featuring nearly 50 artists and collection of 100+ original contemporary works available to purchase.

We're 10! This crazy scheme of ours has actually lasted 10 years 😂

It's crazy to think that the doors first opened at Lucius Street in 2014 and since then we've hosted hundreds of exhibitions and organised hundreds more events across Torbay, South Devon and even further afield in the UK, to celebrate the artists and creatives we have in this spectacular part of the world.

At that first exhibition, we sold our first work as well; a pretty special hand stitched interpretation of Picasso's Guernica created by artist Gilly Pitman and purchased by Toni Parks, daughter of American film director Gordon Parks. What a great start to a big adventure...

There've been ups and downs and Torbay certainly isn't the easiest place to work in arts and culture, but somehow, we're still here, and even though we've got some big challenges ahead, we reckon we've probably got another 10 years in us!

But anyway, here's to 10 years! Sounds like an excuse for a shindig right??

Introducing Stewart Taylor who will be joining us as part of our Contemporary British Printmakers exhibition at Delamore Arts 2024. Save the date, and join us in May!

Stewart is continuing with his Tree Portraits series from Devon, which started over 4 years ago. Initially inspired by the street trees of his London neighbourhood, these moved outwards to the parks and the wilds nearby, quickly becoming a conversation about our lack of connectivity with the natural world.

He has recently printed Joshua Trees from California that were destroyed by the Cima Dome wildfire; and trees near the Danube in Slovakia, that were photographed for him by fellow artist Eva Boda.

Stewart also raised £1000 for the Woodland Trust in 2023 through his print 'The Old Man of Calke'.

"I am a printmaker inspired by the big skies, wetlands and moors of the South West. My work endeavours to represent these ephemeral landscapes using a medium usually associated with bold blocks of colour. I use reduction printing, mono print techniques and various methods of ink thinning to achieve a lightness of touch often described as ‘painterly’.

The creation of my prints is a painstaking exercise using a medium not entirely suited to rendering the fleeting nature of my chosen subject matter! I should be a watercolourist but I love the combination of craft and fine art printmaking offers."

Introducing Phillippa Walter who will be joining us as part of our Contemporary British Printmakers exhibition at Delamore Arts 2024. Save the date, and join us in May!

Phillippa Walter was born in Canterbury (1989) and lives on the Gower where she works as a linocut printmaker.

Phillippa studied a BA (Hons) in Illustration and painting in Cardiff and The University of Arts Lisboa. After graduating she followed her passion for nature worked as an outdoor instructor, living nomadically across the UK and Europe climbing up mountains or paddling in oceans. However, when Phillippa sustained an injury which ended her career and a late diagnosis of Autism which required her reevaluate her life style, she opted for the slow and peaceful life of an artist by the sea.

For the past few years Phillippa has artistically explored her new home on the Gower, working on a series of Linocut prints that are inspired by the fine detail of woodcut, especially incorporating inspiration from Soviet and 1960s illustration, pushing Lino to its limits and creating illustrative pieces that depict the beautiful creatures that live here, and the relationship we have with outdoor sports.
