Thanks to all who joined us for the opening of ‘Homes and Gardens’ on Saturday!

The second of our summer exhibitions takes the gaze away from views, looking closer to home.

‘Homes and Gardens’ has a decidedly domestic theme, as our artists and makers have created work inspired by home interiors and exteriors.

A very warm Byre Gallery welcome to who is showing with us for the first time!

This gorgeous miniature still life is ‘A Folly’.

Bess is a self-taught artist, living by the sea in West Sussex. Always creative, it took a few years of experimenting with different media to find her niche with oil paints.

She is most interested in still life, seeking to capture a feeling of calm grace and quiet composure no matter what the subject. She enjoys offering objects a little stage to sit quietly on so that they might be considered.

The exhibition is open Tues-Sat, 11am-5pm until 3rd August. Come in and say hello, or view now at the link in our bio!

Thank you to all who submitted. We're so grateful for the time and consideration you put into your application, and it was such a pleasure to see your work.

You'll be hearing more about these talented artists and makers ahead of 'Hidden Depths', which opens 7th August. But for now, wishing a warm Byre Gallery welcome to:

It’s been a pleasure to share the work of for the first time at the Byre Gallery. I’ve long admired Julie’s work, and am delighted to have her exhibiting in ‘The View from Here’.

This gorgeous work is ’Millbrook Early Morning’.

A sense of place dominates Julie’s work which conveys ethereal and surreal landscapes beneath atmospheric skies.

Julie’s process combines intuitive marks that suggest composition with the painterly push and pull of perspective through colour and tone. Through this ritual, the paint evolves into constructed landscapes that seem to exist outside of a specific history, and offer ambivalent versions of our world.

The paintings are ambiguous and without narrative, inviting the viewer to bring their own understanding of the manipulated space. Each is a combination of real and imagined places, highlighting the way we imprint our autobiographies onto the spaces we inhabit.

There is just one day left to see Julie’s work in ‘The View from Here’, alongside beautiful collections from our regular visual and applied artists.

Open tomorrow, 11am-5pm, or at the link in our bio now.

It’s time for another as we celebrate the gallery’s 10th anniversary, and it’s ’s turn.

There are some artists and makers you just know instantly would be ideal for your gallery clients, and Imogen is one of those.

I first saw her work on Tresco, on the Isles of Scilly in 2018, and loved her delicious colour palette and elegant compositions. When I looked at her online I saw she was already showing in quite a few galleries, so I assumed she wouldn’t be looking for any others, but filed her away on my mental ‘Wishlist’.

A year or so later, I discovered that she was a close friend of my lovely gallery regular , and I wondered if Jill might put in a good word for the Byre Gallery as a delightful place to work with!

Then, in 2020, the Covid pandemic lockdowns began. During that time, I heard from so many of our clients who sorely missed their visits to our very special corner of Cornwall, and I was happy to include photographs of the local area in my regular newsletters, I had such a lovely response to those, and of course Jill Hudson’s paintings of the peninsula. Later that summer, when I took a friend on a walk around Millbrook Lake that I’d never shown her before an idea for an exhibition began to crystallise. Why not have two friends walking together around the peninsula and capturing some of the most idyllic spots?

I put the idea to both Jill and Imogen, and was delighted to receive a resounding yes. Hurrah! The pair got together over the next few months walking, sketching, and swimming on the Rame Peninsula, and each created two amazing collections of work which became ‘Walking Distance’, our Spring 2022 (sell-out!) exhibition.

Since then, Imogen has made several very welcome returns to the Byre with more stunning work of the peninsula, which I’m delighted to have found homes for throughout the UK and overseas. We have some of her most recent delights in the gallery at the moment as part of ‘The View From Here’ — but they are disappearing fast — and I’m looking forward to seeing what other magic she can capture on the peninsula in the future.

It’s the last week of ‘The View from Here’! Thanks to all who have visited, in-person and online, and for your warm responses to this original body of work by our wonderful gallery regulars. It’s been a pleasure to capture your favourite locales and celebrate the beauty of our forgotten corner with you.

This gorgeous aquamarine and dendritic agate pendant in brushed silver is one of 12 pieces designed and handmade by in response to your much loved Rame views.

Carin uses recycled sterling silver, and creates organic textures by fusing, imbuing the metal with an understated frosted matte finish or a dark patina to express its character. Each of her designs is inspired by her Swedish heritage, combined with the influences of the stunning natural beauty surrounding her workshop on the coast of north Cornwall.

Do come and visit the exhibition if you haven’t had a chance yet. We’re open until Saturday 29th June, 11am-5pm each day and look forward to welcoming you!

This gorgeous abstract is 'Woodland' by .robinsoncarter. It's one of eight compelling pieces created by Alice for 'The View from Here', inspired by local views of the Rame Peninsula.

Mixed media on canvas board. 42 x 54cm framed.

Alice is a painter, printmaker, walker, and explorer based in Plymouth. She is passionate about capturing the essence of place.

From foraging in the undergrowth, to watching birds take flight and plummet back to land, Alice uses a mixed media approach to capture both the detail and the expansiveness of these unique landscapes.

Her primary materials are pastels, acrylic paint, and charcoal: through playing with the interrelationship of these processes, she mirrors the interconnectedness of these places in a way that holds and celebrates their essence.

'The View from Here' continues in the gallery until 29th June. Open Tues-Sat, 11am-5pm, and at the link in our bio now.

This is 'Milbrook Millpond' by the wonderful , now showing in 'The View from Here'.

Imogen is an artist based in Cornwall who works both en plain air and in her studio. She is committed to observing the Cornish coast, imbued with her experience of being immersed in the landscape, underpinned by realism. She embraced the opportunity to collaborate with our clients and visitors on documenting their beloved Rame views.

The energy captured in the drawings helps maintain a spirit of place in the paintings, as well as a sense of immediacy and freedom.

Her visual language, depicted through brushstrokes and drawn line, is constantly evolving, and she feels is reflective of the changing coastline.

You can see more of Imogen’s work in ‘The View from Here’, open 11am-5pm, Tuesday-Saturday, until Saturday 29th June. Or, view at the link in our bio now.

This gorgeous pot is Kostrel: The Dappling Woodland by , created as part of a new collection for 'The View from Here'.

Zawn is a Cornish word for a deep and narrow sea inlet or cave into which the tide flows. This large sculptural Zawn piece is hand built in black clay with a hollow space piercing through, reflecting the tide worn sea caves found on the coastline.

Anthea Bowen made her first pot at the age of six when she tagged along with her mother to pottery evening classes. Her affection for clay was re-kindled in 2003, and since moving to Cornwall in 2007 she has developed her practice, creating her own pottery studio in 2019. Anthea finds inspiration for her hand built work in the Cornish landscape:

“I feel at home in nature and ideas for new pieces are conceived during walks along the Cornwall coastline close to my studio. I like to create calming, contemporary ceramics, which reflect this rugged coastal environment. The soft lines and the positive and negative space created by the juxtaposition of sea-worn rounded boulders, the textures of the rock, the beautiful fine lines running through pebbles, rock pools with shiny water and sea caves… these are all elements that kindle new ideas and inspire new collections of work.”

You can view Anthea's full collection inspired by favourite Rame views submitted by our visitors and clients in the gallery until 29th June, open Tues-Sat, 11am-5pm, or at the link in our bio now.

Now online, you’ll find a wonderful new collection of silver jewellery by .

As part of the Byre Gallery’s 10th anniversary celebrations, I asked some of our artists and makers if they would like to suggest collections of work to mark the occasion. Beverly Bartlett has most definitely risen to the challenge with a stunning — and entirely new — collection of silver jewellery.

Beverly chose to incorporate the number 10 with a nod to Greek mythology. She elaborates on her inspiration:

"Whilst making jewellery a while ago, it occurred to me that the number 10 in digit form looked rather like Io, which is one of the moons of Jupiter.

I took this observation a bit further and concluded that a large textured silver disc from my Circles range looks like a moon and a long ‘bail’ would look like the ‘I’, and so the idea of some pieces for the Byre Gallery developed.

Then, I did a little research to see if the origins of Io would influence my design:

Io was a daughter of Inachus in Greek mythology. Zeus fell in love with her and, to protect her from the wrath of his wife, Hera, changed her into a white heifer. Hera persuaded Zeus to give her the heifer and sent Argus Panoptes (“the All-Seeing”) to watch her. Zeus sent the god Hermes, who lulled Argus to sleep and killed him. Hera then sent a gadfly to torment Io, who therefore wandered all over the earth, crossed the Ionian Sea, swimming the strait that was thereafter known as the Bosporus (meaning Ox-Ford), reached Egypt, where she was restored to her original form and gave birth to Epaphus.

Fascinating, but not a lot of help in progressing the design process. But I hope you will enjoy the collection, which has a nod to Greek mythology in a contemporary style.”

You can view the full collection at the link in our bio now.

This is 'Halcyon Days' by . One of a number of gorgeous Rame views Jill has created for 'The View from Here'.

All the work in the exhibition — visual and applied — is inspired by photographs suggested by you, our lovely gallery supporters. It's been a pleasure to see you discover your submissions in the gallery!

A departure from her usual Rame vistas and beloved coastal path, Jill embraced the chance to respond to a new subject: a photo of captured by .

I love the way Jill has chosen to emphasise the wildflowers, imbued with the energy of her signature dynamic brushstrokes, resulting in vibrant sprawling blooms.

The exhibition is open 11am-5pm, Tuesday-Saturday, until Saturday 29th June. Or, view at the link in our bio now.

This beautiful kiln-formed glass vessel is ‘Flower Meadow’ by . It’s one of six vibrant pieces Ruth created in response to your submissions of your favourite views of the Rame Peninsula for ‘The View from Here’.

Ruth’s signature is her use of vivid, dramatic colour. Her inspiration is derived from her observation of colour, balance, and tone as they appear in nature.

Through layered glass, she creates a dialogue of lines, patterns, and hues, observing how light illuminates them.

You can view Ruth’s work in the gallery, Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm until 29th June, or at the link in our bio now.

How cinematic is this moment in Kingsand, photographed by , and captured in acrylic and ink by ?

Steven Buckler's mixed media landscape paintings stand out for their rich colour and depth: manoeuvring a loose and expressive style to portray nature in all its glory and with an unapologetic honesty.

Steven’s background in animation shines through, as he imbues this climactic moment with energy and motion, and a discernibly graphic touch.

'Kingsand' is one of four paintings Steven created for 'The View from Here', though one of them has already been snapped up!

You can view his work in the gallery until 29th June, 11am-5pm, Tuesday-Saturday, or at the link in our bio now.

How beautiful is this Iolite ring by ?

Carin has created a bespoke collection of jewellery inspired by favourite views of the Rame Peninsula submitted by our clients and visitors for ‘The View from Here’.

This one of a kind Iolite ring epitomises Carin’s signature style: the stone takes centre stage, complemented by the understated frosted matte finish of the silver setting.

Each piece in the collection showcases the natural elegance and organic simplicity inherent in Carin’s designs.

You can browse the full collection in the gallery now. We are open 11am-5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

It’s not a requirement for all our artists and makers to be dog lovers as it can mean lengthy chats on all pup related subjects instead of talking about work, and that is nearly always the case with jewellery designer .

As we celebrate the gallery’s 10th anniversary this year, we’re sharing how our artists and makers came to exhibit with the Byre Gallery, and it’s Claire’s turn to be in the spotlight.

When Siobhan Purdy () and I were working on our summer 2019 exhibition ‘The Coast is Clear’, she mentioned that her friend Claire was a jewellery designer whose work might suit the exhibition.

I wasn’t really looking for any new jewellers at the time, and I was also aware that getting a recommendation from one of your existing artists about their creative friends isn’t always a certainty that I’ll like the work as much as they do.

But having looked at Claire’s website, I was instantly drawn to her elegant and intricate silver work. She describes her jewellery as ‘sculpture for the body’, which I knew would be a great fit for the exhibition, and I could already imagine a number of my clients falling in love with it.

I got in touch, and during our chat on the phone she told me that she loved seeing my instagram posts of Colin, my late and much missed Gallery Dog. A fantastic jewellery designer who also loves dogs, it was win win!

Since then, Claire has continued to be a regular part of the Byre Gallery’s exhibitions and has won many fans and admirers for her gorgeous pieces.

Claire’s own beautiful dog Betsy has also made her own contribution to the gallery’s story: when she had a litter in 2022, Claire kept puppy Olive and two of the other pups chose two of our artists as their forever humans. Teddy lives with and his wife Sarah, and is now the proud owner of his brother Qbert. Puppy love all around.

We have a new collection of stunning work from Claire later this summer, and I’m looking forward to a visit to her studio soon to see her latest creations as well as the two other delights in the studio: Olive and Betsy.

How about some silver jewellery that’s ‘sculpture for the paws’?

If you’ve found yourself reaching for an extra layer, take a look at our collection of beautiful lambswool scarves by .

Each scarf is hand woven on Teresa’s preloved floor loom in her garden studio overlooking the North Cornwall coastline.

Teresa finds the creative process — from choosing the colours, working out the measurements, warping, dressing the loom, weaving and finishing — very therapeutic.

She likes to work organically, adding random bursts of shocking pink next to a burnt orange to create added interest, or adds a natural oatmeal with a mustard yellow to soften the colours. Because of this, each of her scarves is totally unique.

Spandle — to leave wet foot or paw prints on a floor (Kent dialect)

This beautiful cuff is another piece from the collaborative jewellery collection by and .

Jo () is fascinated with the preservation of language spoken by everyday people, and how we might hold onto words that are teetering on the brink of obsolescence. Each piece is inspired by a word chosen from Jo's Wordhoard project.

After selecting a word, Jo set about designing the lettering. Lucy then etched Jo's design into silver, using oxidising and polished silver to highlight different parts of the cuff, depending on the word.

You'll find their gorgeous 'Soodle' and 'Spangin' cuffs online too, alongside a series of brooches — each word is as curious and pleasing as the next.

I know I'll be adding 'Spandle' to my lexicon, thanks to !

You can still browse beautiful works online in Spring at the Byre until the end of the month, like 'Camping and Glamping (en plein air)' by - oil on panel - 30 x 30cm.

This piece is from Heath’s latest show, ‘By this River’, which explores the riverine environment, and the points at which nature and industry jut against each other.

‘Camping and Glamping (en plein air)' is an example of this juxtaposition, in which wild camping and modern leisure-seeking converge, and the tension that arises at this intersection.

Heath is a master of abstraction, composition, and colour, and yet his observations are often playful, reminding the viewer of early childhood perspectives of the outdoors.

As part of the Byre Gallery’s 10th anniversary celebrations, the first of our summer exhibitions features work inspired by our clients’ favourite views of our gorgeous Rame Peninsula.

’The View from Here’ opens on 1st June, but we thought we’d give you a couple of sneak peeks beforehand.

This is ‘Tracing the Wind’ by , which was inspired by three different views of the Rame coastline to capture a quintessential breezy spring day on the coast path.

Jill’s ‘Golden Birds’ and her heady summer garden scenes are always hugely popular in the gallery, but for many of our clients nothing beats her Rame Head work, which are among Jill’s favourite creations too.

“I love painting there,” says Jill, “And I make a day of it — driving over to the Byre for a coffee and a catch up and then setting off on what is now one of my favourite walks from Tregantle to Rame Head. I’ve now painted many versions of said walk in many different weathers and with many varying degrees of cold sea swims... and it doesn’t get old.”

Jill will be joined by our regular visual artists , , and .robinsoncarter, who have all created gorgeous new collections inspired by your Rame views. Ceramicist and jewellery designer will also be sharing collections responding to the theme of the exhibition, and I’m delighted that we have a series of Rame works inspired by client submissions from Plymouth-based artist , whose work I’ve long admired.

You can enjoy all of Jill’s new collection and those by our other artists and makers in the gallery and online from 1st June.

The Byre Gallery on the Rame peninsula in south-east Cornwall exhibits stunning works of design-led craft and contemporary fine art by leading and emerging makers and artists from throughout the UK.

The Byre is open three times a year with exhibitions held in spring, summer and at Christmas, and is a must-visit destination for all lovers of fine art as well as contemporary craft in ceramics, glass, jewellery, metals and textiles.

An exhibition at the Byre gallery shows art and craft in the suggestion of a domestic context: each exhibition is specially curated to show how art and craft can look in the home rather than shown in a more traditional gallery setting.

The Byre opened in spring 2014, and is owned and curated by Elaine Dye who left behind her former profession of PR to turn her passion for contemporary craft into her new day job; a move she has never regretted!
