What happens when a group of artists spends five days on a remote, abandoned island with no electricity?

Discover the answer in our new exhibition, Salt and Hearth, running from 1 July – 29 August.

Following a creative residency on the island of Stroma, seven artists immersed themselves in island life – cooking on an old kitchen stove, sharing stories by candlelight, exploring the landscape, and responding through drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media.

Inspired by salt, weather, memory, and the enduring presence of the women who once called Stroma home, Salt and Hearth offers seven unique perspectives on this remarkable place, celebrating creativity, community and the spirit of island life.

Featuring work by Aileen Paton, Caroline Swan, Shelagh Swanson, Jacqui Higgs, Elizabeth Henderson, Sandie Beck and Nichola Beckett.

Open Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–5pm
Café North open 10am–4pm

Discover the story behind this unusual object, the people who brought it here, and what it reveals about Dounreay's place in a global history of nuclear innovation.
