Tavistock Museum

Tavistock Museum For all enquiries please call or email the Museum Disabled access only to ground level Welcome Area, Museum Shop and Audio-Visual Room.

The museum is open daily 11.00am to 3.00pm from Easter Saturday until the 31st October - sometimes longer in summer months and can open other times by appointment. The museum first opened in 1985 in a room below the town council offices in Drake Road. It moved to its present location above the historic Court Gate Inn 2003, and extended into the adjoining cottage in 2006. Its main entrance is from

the Guildhall Square. The main museum occupies two large rooms: one of which contains many town artefacts, and the other is used for exhibitions. The museum is located in the historic centre of the town. It promotes the Cornwall and West Devon Mining WHS, and is an interpretation centre for the town and its locality, with displays on Tavistock Abbey, Sir Francis Drake, local mining and many other topics. For 2017 there will be two new exhibitions 'The Bicentenary of the Tavistock Canal' and 'The WW2 Liberator Crash on Whitchurch Down'. The museum has no paid staff and is run entirely by volunteers.
