This charming pictorial map of Hong Kong was published in 1935. Design by S.D. Panaiotaky, who also designed several 1930’s Hong Kong travel posters. Sadly for a man (or perhaps a woman) who produced such brilliant work, their name has faded away completely. We don’t even know what the initials stand for.

But we are bringing a very scarce and highly desireable original of this litho printed map to Hong Kong next month for the Firsts Hong Kong rare book fair. It’s buried inside one of the books we will be displaying. For now we won’t reveal any more! So please enjoy the map.

Rather rare vintage China Customs label for use on the Canton Kowloon Railway. It’s quite small, 50mm x 63mm. These probably came on a roll, and were torn off for use at the perforations. Circa 1930’s, maybe earlier. In excellent condition.

It’s Chelsea Bookfair at the end of this week, Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd Nov at Chelsea Town Hall.

We will exhibit an excellent large photograph album, compiled circa 1910 by an expatriate Danish businessman living and working in Shanghai. Over 160 photographs in and around Shanghai, street scenes, social and family shots, sailing, shooting, rowing, dinner parties, etc. and including 24 professional images, 14cm x 10cm, of Peking, Shanghai and studio photographs.

This is an excellent album, with a strong narrative element. Stop by our booth to take a look

ALBUMEN PRINT PHOTOGRAPH

Looking West along Queen’s Road Central, Hong Kong

Photographer: Lai Fong (Afong)

Date: 1870’s

Photographed looking west towards Bonham Strand from outside Nam Cheong’s Artist Studio at No. 70 Queen’s Road Central. Today this is the site of Lane Crawford House. This is a very early photograph of Hong Kong with most of the buildings along the road only two storeys high. By the late 19th century all were three or more storeys. The taller building in the rear centre of the photograph is at the junction of Queen’s Road and Bonham Strand. There are several sedan chairs lined up along the roadside waiting for passengers. Most of the signage for the shops and businesses are in Chinese, though several tailors and Yuen Sing Printers are also promoting themselves in English.

Lai Fong (aka Lai Afong or Afong) (c1839-1890) was born in Guangdong and moved to Hong Kong in the 1850’s. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential Chinese photographer of the 19th century. Lai worked alongside many Hong Kong based western photographers including D.K. Griffith and José Silveira, and his photography was praised by John Thomson as “extremely well-executed, [and] remarkable for their artistic choice of position”. By the early 1870’s Lai’s studio was located at 54 Queen’s Road, and this photograph was taken from almost outside his studio.

Reference: an almost identical image taken from the same spot is found in Terry Bennett – History of Photography in China, Volume 3, Figure 6.7. It differs only in the positioning of the sedan chair bearers.

A superb photograph of an early Hong Kong street scene, and in excellent condition.

Size: 275mm x 212mm. Backed onto original album card. An exceptional image in size, tonal range, contrast and sharpness.

We will be bringing this photograph to Firsts Hong Kong. See you there

Asking in hope rather than expectation!

Does anyone have a copy of this book on their shelves. It seems rather elusive. I don’t want to buy the book, just looking for some material which should be in here.
