While the Museum is closed for redevelopment, you can still get involved with our programme across the city!

Threads is a monthly social, self-help group working with yarn and fabric and a variety of textile techniques: knitting, crochet, rag-rug and hand sewing.

Bring along your own textile project, pick up some tips, share your skills or simply come along for a chat.

Threads sessions are now taking place at Culture House Sunderland on the first Tuesday of each month – no booking required, just drop in!

How do you pack up a museum? 📦

That’s the huge challenge facing staff at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens as they begin carefully packing away the museum’s collections ahead of its once-in-a-generation £13.6 million transformation.

Every one of the museum’s 1,800 treasured objects will continue to be professionally cared for throughout the closure period, safeguarding Sunderland’s heritage for generations to come.
