🌳 Spotlight on Dr Katy Vigurs of DEAD GOOD.
Dr Katy Vigurs is a creative death educator in Sunderland and one half of DEAD GOOD. Her past in social research and adult education informs her current work as your friendly eco-funeral guide. Katy works with grieving families as a storyteller & story-keeper. She's a green burial enthusiast and her mantra is "It's okay to decay!"

Katy will be exploring the concept of death as a natural part of life and will show how our future deaths can potentially enrich local nature and natural landscapes. If you want to become a tree when you die, Katy will tell you how! Katy is an expert in natural burial practices. She'll be sharing how natural burial grounds in the North East create habitat for wildlife and preserve existing habitats (e.g. woodland, species rich meadows, orchards). Interest in natural death is growing as people are becoming increasingly concerned about the emissions and fuel-use associated with gas-fired cremation, the use of stone for gravestones (often shipped considerable distances from overseas quarries), or the use of formaldehyde for embalming, which has an adverse effect upon groundwater. Come along and talk with Katy about the choices we can make so that our deaths won’t cost the earth and will instead create an ecologically protective, nature-rich legacy.

NEW WORKSHOPS ADDED

Thanks to funding from The National Lottery's Awards for All fund, we are delighted to offer a series of free creative planter decorating workshops and planting sessions at Hills Arts Centre in Sunderland city centre.

Planter Decorating Workshops
Join us on Wednesday 7th May or Friday 9th May for our planter decorating sessions. Workshops will run from 10am–12pm and 2pm–4pm on both days.

During these sessions, you will have the opportunity to create vibrant and eye-catching designs for city centre planters. You will be able to paint freehand, use lino prints and experiment with a range of creative techniques to decorate the planters, helping to add bursts of colour and creativity to Sunderland’s public spaces. All materials will be provided and no previous experience is necessary.

Planting Sessions
Come along on Monday 12th May or Wednesday 14th May to take part in our planting sessions, with sessions running from 10am–12pm and 2pm–4pm on both days.

Working together, we will fill the decorated planters with a variety of colourful flowers and plants, helping to transform Sunderland’s city centre into a more vibrant and welcoming space. These sessions are a wonderful way to connect with others, learn new skills and leave a lasting impact on the community.

Venue Information
All sessions will take place at Hills Arts Centre, located in Sunderland city centre. The venue has full disabled access, ensuring everyone can participate comfortably.

How to Book
All sessions are free to attend, but booking is essential as spaces are limited. To secure your place, please visit: https://www.norfolkstreetarts.com/awards-for-all-project and choose which event you would like to attend.
