🛍Museum Shop 🛍

The images show just a small selection of the items available in our museum shop.

If you want to shop local and buy from local people - then visit the museum and shop this weekend.

We stock a selection of jewellery made locally with Stonehaven Beach seaglass and pebbles. We also stock Stonehaven Seasalt made with water collected from just offshore.

Thinking ahead to Hogmanay we have handy pocket sized hip flasks and ceramic shot cups. We even have a teatowel with the word 'Cheers' translated in to multiple languages.

And of course we have fridge magnets, baby bibs and lots lots more.

Open this weekend from 12.30pm to 3.30pm

With Mannequin Mike now moved to our viewing area and practising how to swing a fireball, the entryway at the museum was ready for the Christmas tree. Enter Santa's helpers Mary and Clare who have made the museum look more festive - just in time for the snow and Advent.

Pop in and see us this weekend. Open Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm

We are so pleased to announce that the museum shop is now stocking a series of cards by local artist Margaret D MacDonald.

📷1 - Snow on the Bervie Braes - from an acrylic.
📷2 - Poppies by the Carron - from an acrylic.
📷3 - Sailing by Dunnottar - from an original painting.
📷4 - Castle Haven - from an original painting.
📷5 - A New Day - from an acrylic.

These cards would be ideal for sending to friends overseas for Christmas or even framed for a gift. Museum will be open this weekend from 12.30pm to 3.30pm each day.

A regular reader of our Stanehyve Tolbooth Times recently sent us this great image of a group of bakers taken approx 1910 - 1920.

The tall gentleman on the left is our readers great grandfather Alexander Dallas (1874- 1947) who married Agnes Fowler. They had 5 children and lived at Seaview Cottage, 19 Robert Street.

We have identified that the picture was taken outside 9 Cameron Street which was the bake house for David Greig, Baker. His shop was on Market Square where McHardys is today.

Can any of our followers identify any of the other bakers and date the picture?

This weekend will be your last opportunity to view our display of the New Kincardineshire colony 150th anniversary.

Find out more about the brave adventurers who left their homes here in Stonehaven and the North East and travelled all the way to New Brunswick in Canada 150 years ago.

The display covers the reasons why they left, their journey there, the initial hardships they faced in their new homes, and what happened to them later.

Got the October holiday blues? Kids are fed up already? You have run out of ideas for entertaining them?

Pick up a Treasure Trail map of Stonehaven from and solve the clues.

And if it is too wet to go treasure hunting, visit the museum this weekend instead. Plenty to see and a dinosaur trail for the children.

We need your help to answer a query.

A local teacher is asking if any children were evacuated to Stonehaven during WW2 and if so, which schools did they attend?

We know that the big industrial cities did evacuate children to quieter, rural areas - but did any come to Stoney?

We are taking part this weekend in Open Days 2023.

Visit the oldest building in Stonehaven. It was built in the late 1500's and has been a Tolbooth since 1600.

The centuries have seen it be a storage facility for Dunnottar Castle, a courthouse and jail and now over 400 years later a restaurant (upstairs) and museum (downstairs).

Museum Favourites

What a lot of homes in the 19th and early 20th century would have had

📷 1 - you would need to grind your seed to make flour for baking.
📷 2 - a 1950's kitchen cabinet. Ours is pale green. What colour was the one in your family - because we bet you or someone you know had one.
📷 3 - a coal fired range oven. Heating the home, the kettle, the pot of food and even your irons for pressing clothes.
📷 4 - a 1920's washing machine. Still manual and requiring lots of muscle power.
📷 5 - a Singer treadle sewing machine. A real skill required to keep feet moving the treadle and at the same time have hands guiding the fabric.

The recent donation to the museum of old Stonehaven photos gave us these great images of our outdoor pool. They are all taken in the 1930's - but look at the crowds for a swimming gala!!!

Image 3 is presumably taken in 1933/34 when pool was under construction.

When you volunteer at the museum, you never know who or what will come in the door.

Today we received a donation of old images of Stonehaven including this one.

Taken we believe in February 1938, it shows the boys and girls who had competed in the annual festival of the Stonehaven Fatherland Burns Club.

The reverse of the image says they are pictured on the steps outside Sunnyhill where the competition has been held.

After a Google search, the only Sunnyhill listed in Stonehaven is a house on Ann Street.

Will this be the correct building? Do you recognise anyone in the image?
Let us know.
