Jesse Shirley's Etruscan Bone and Flint Mill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and grade II* listed building comprises a calcining kiln, crusher and horizontal steam engine, and ten grinding pans driven from the shaft room powered by ‘Princess’ – a circa 1820 Bateman & Sheratt rotative beam engine of Boulton and Watt pattern. Steam is raised by a hand stoked Cornish Boiler built at nearby Cliffe Va
le in 1903. The building, which houses the Mill was constructed in 1856 and is largely unaltered. It is the only working Victorian bone and flint grinding mill in the World that uses the original machinery and is powered by the original beam engine. It is open, 'in steam' and operating a number of times each year. Also on the site is the junction of the Trent & Mersey and Caldon Canals, the summit lock of the Trent & Mersey, a staircase lock, canal warehouse, gauging dock and check office, operating blacksmiths forge and a visitors centre.
