Explore the incredible Minton Archive at Stoke-on-Trent City Achives, The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery this September!
We are pleased to announce an opportunity for local secondary school children to experience some of the beautiful materials which form the Minton collection in this special project, designed and delivered by British Ceramics Biennial and The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery (PMAG) with Stoke-on-Trent City Archives.
Aimed at Year 8 to Year 10 students, this project involves a workshop at PMAG where students will learn about the Minton collection and gain access to the Stoke-on-Trent City Archives with an archivist who will show them examples from the wonderful primary resources housed here.
Students will learn about the work of an archivist and what it takes to preserve a valuable collection. They will find out about ways of researching and documenting resources and use their research to design their own Minton-inspired piece. There will be a follow-up session in school where students can create their own clay work in response to their research, and a celebration afternoon where students will receive their fired work, meet with other participants and reflect on their experience.

Workshop dates: Tuesdays on 15 and 22 September at 10:15am and 12:45pm
Session Duration: 1hr 45mins
Led by: BCB Associate artists and museum staff, who will liaise with schools on dates for the follow-up session

Currently on display in our ‘Favourite Things’ exhibition is this earthenware Jug, thrown and modelled in the form of an owl by Arthur Harris. Farnham Pottery (studio), Surrey, 1968.

It was chosen by Lydia Sweetmore, Visitor Experience Assistant, Stoke-on-Trent Museums.

“My favourite thing in the museum is Ozzy Owl as I love Owls. This is Mozzy Owl. Ozzy’s little brother who is here to say Hello.”

We are looking forward to the start of Appetite’s Big Feast programme at the museum this Friday 28 August.

Appearing across the festival throughout both days, the team from Sign Spinning UK will be helping audiences navigate between areas, discover hidden gems and find their way to performances, activities and festival highlights.

Using spinning arrow signs and plenty of skill, they'll be bringing visibility, movement and a bit of festival magic to every corner of the site. Perfect for finding your next favourite thing.

See them at the museum on Friday at 12:30 - 13:00 and Saturday 14:30 – 14:45 outside the Spitfire Gallery.

Our next Twilight event is on Friday 18 September when we bring you the ‘Legends NOW Show’ live to our theatre.

As part of the Appetite Big Feast programme at the museum, we are pleased to welcome four nonverbal, larger-than-life animal characters called; Bounce, Patch, Spike and Slither on Saturday 29 Aug. They will be roving through The Big Feast, mixing and mingling, dancing, jigging around and being very cheeky with passers-by.

Expect gentle chaos, high fives, and lots of fun! Performance at 12:15 - 12:45 outside the Spitfire Gallery.
