Upcoming exhibition – Fresh Air For The Potteries: 150 Years of William Blake

25 November 2023 – 5 May 2024

2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the photographer, William Blake. From his home and shop in Longton, Blake captured a unique record of the people and landscapes of north Staffordshire and the surrounding area.

Featuring nearly 50 of Blake’s iconic photographs and postcards, this exhibition explores Blake’s career and beliefs, the social history of the early 20th century, and the Edwardian ‘Postcard Craze’ that swept the country in the years before the First World War. Photographs include some of Blake’s most famous ‘smokies’ of The Potteries landscape, alongside lesser-seen images of years gone by.

Images have been reproduced from the collections of The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, from the Warrillow Collection kindly supplied by Keele University Library, and from the postcard collection of Jon Heal.

Don't forget - next Friday. A brilliant film about a moment in 90s pop history - and your chance to talk to the man in the middle of it all!

Friday Twilight – I Get Knocked Down…..

Friday 3 November

This film documentary is part music, part unflinching character study and part punk version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ – I Get Knocked Down.

Dunstan Bruce of CHUMBAWAMBA takes us on an epic journey from the anarchist squats of Leeds to Madison Square Gardens to the depths of despair before he determines to get back up again, heeding his own band’s words to continue.

It’s the frank, funny, surreal and deeply human story of the most successful anarchist music experiment of all time.

Film screening at 7pm followed by a Q&A session with Dunstan himself. Tickets £8, please call 01782 232323 or email [email protected] to book.

Bar opens at 6.30pm with an interval at 8pm.

27/10/2023

We are excited to offer a FREE ClayMuseum study programme for one secondary school class at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery with our partners British Ceramics Biennial.

We are looking for a group of approximately 20 students to work with artist, Nicola Colclough and the museum Education Team to engage with our galleries and discuss how they would like the museum to develop in the future.

We want to learn how young people perceive our museum spaces. And through a series of workshops using clay and hands-on approaches, they can inform and shape future curation and engagement programming.

The programme will consist of five days, over the course of five weeks throughout January and February 2024. At least three of these days will be at the museum. There is a coach grant available for travel costs.

To apply, please email [email protected] before Monday 6 November and let us know the name of your school, the age of your class and how many pupils.

Priority will be given to schools with a high pupil premium within Stoke-on-Trent that have not yet taken part in the CLAY Museum project.
