Did you know that our printing press needs a yearly MOT? When we close for winter, the Collections Team are busy looking after the objects in our care. For the printing presses, this includes checking the gears, applying oils, cleaning dust and debris, and ensuring everything is in perfect working order.

Be sure to check out the Print Room when we reopen on 14th May.

In celebration of International Women's Day we're throwing the spotlight on Jane Bewick (1787– 1881); editor and oldest daughter of Thomas Bewick.

It's fair to say that Jane badgered her father to document his life in a personal memoir. Thomas began the manuscript in November 1822 as a direct address to her: "My Dear Jane, It is in compliance with your wish that I have... made up my mind to give you some account of my life."

The resulting memoir - published posthumously in 1862 as 'A Memoir of Thomas Bewick, Written by Himself '- was edited by Jane but her role was more than that of editor, or indeed loving daughter. Jane shaped the memoir, selecting anecdotes and weaving in family stories and memories, including those of daily life at Cherryburn and young Thomas's childhood pranks. She supervised the inclusion of Bewick's engravings and added footnotes for context as well as creating the appendix with unfinished works, ensuring her father's legacy.

Jane, together with her sister Isabella, preserved and venerated Thomas Bewick's work and life. Testament to her brilliance, but also the incredibly close bond the family shared.

We have been guilty of complaining a little bit about the winter weather recently, but Thomas Bewick was a big fan.

In his memoir he says ""To be placed in the midst of a wood in the night, in whirlwinds of snow, while the tempest howled above my head, was sublimity itself, and drew forth aspirations... such as had not warmed my imagination... before".

Part of the allure of the season may have been the "winter birds of passage" that Bewick meticulously tracked, categorised and commented on. He noted that winter brought specific visitors to the North East of England.

Miniature Worlds: Little Landscapes from Thomas Bewick to Beatrix Potter explores the intricate beauty of small-scale landscapes across three centuries of British art. The exhibition has a particular focus on vignette format illustrations and the changing relationship between text, illustration, and publishing.

The exhibition opens with works by our own Thomas Bewick who reinvented both the wood engraving technique and the small borderless ‘vignette’ illustration.
