Methodist Tapestries Collection

Methodist Tapestries Collection The Methodist Tapestries Collection will depict the history of Methodism and related local stories.

Its core collection is based round the story of High House Chapel in Ireshopeburn, now part of the Weardale Museum, where the collection will be displayed. Participation in creating panels is very much welcomed, both within the UK and across the world. Another panel with some work-in-progress pics, again not far off completion! This is 'Joseph Arch, Trade Unionist and MP' embroidered by Luiza. It's another which could be included in the Methodist theme of social justice. Having himself experienced the harsh circumstances prevalent among farm labourers in the 19th century, he was instrumental in the improvement of wages and working conditions for agricultural workers.

We had a lovely day exhibiting our Tapestries Collection at Allenheads with whom we share so much Methodist heritage. We are in the Allenheads Heritage Centre again tomorrow ( Sunday 14 June, 12-4pm. Come and join us.

After a bit of a slow start to our two day exhibition at Ushaw House where the Association of Independent Museums Conference was taking place, things got busy this afternoon and Mike made some very good contacts within the Museums sector. We shared our space in the William Allen Gallery with and exhibition of modern art by Joan Miro and some rather lovely children’s work inspired by that artist. Many thanks to Usher House for allowing us to stage an exhibition there, to Sarah and Maria for demonstrating their embroidery skills and their engagement with visitors and to the appreciative people who visited our exhibition over the two days. Your encouraging comments really are appreciated.

I thought when I reached 100 I’d fulfilled my quest but I’ve been persuaded to add more tapestries if they are worthy of adding to the story of The People Called Methodists. The setting up of The Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society in 1844 was profoundly shaped its early members many of whom were local preachers and chapel members.

This will be our last in the current series showing Lucia's panel 'Boys' Brigade'. The building in the background is actually Wesley's Chapel, London, which - together with the Leysian Mission - lies at the historical roots of the Boys' Brigade movement. The present-day Boys' Brigade continues to work with a wide variety of youngsters, often from underprivileged backgrounds, giving them 'opportunities to learn, grow and discover'. Their current patron is King Charles III.

We have a very busy week coming up with exhibitions first at Ushaw House near Durham (Wed 10 June, Thurs 11th June )

Allenheads Heritage Centre (Sat 13 June, Sunday 14th June)

I’ve been selecting the Tapestries for Ushaw this afternoon.
I’ll be looking for a different selection for Allenheads.

Then I have talks to give at Kirk Merrington, Hexham and Denton before we start again with exhibitions in September.

It’s all go.

The 'Boys' Brigade' panel is packed with tiny details of stitching. Lucia has combined different shades of green to show the field and grassy bank around the lake, and similarly with blues and white to show the sky. We particularly like the way she's used different stitches and stitch directions to create the tread pattern of the tyre!
