Built between 1555 and 1587, the main part of the House has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. There are more than 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. The lead roof extends to three quarters of an acre, restoration and rebuilding of which began in 1983 and took nearly ten years to complete. Visitor facilities include the Orangery Restaurant, Gift Shop, Garden of Surprises, Sculpture Garden and beautiful walks around the historic parkland laid out by Capability Brown and still occupied by a herd of fallow deer. History can come alive in a single trip whether it is to enjoy a guided tour, take a dog for a walk in the park, see the Teddy Bears' picnic in the Garden of Surprises or take time over lunch in the Orangery.

Step inside Burghley House as the sun sets and watch the magnificent State Rooms, works of art and frescoes glow in soft lighting and atmospheric candlelight, while live classical music drifts through the House.

We are looking for an experienced, self-motivated and conservation-minded Shepherd to join the team at the Burghley Estate.

With responsibility for an established flock of around 600 sheep and a small herd of British White cattle, this is an exciting opportunity to take the lead on a thriving livestock enterprise across approximately 700 acres of Burghley parkland.

From the day-to-day care and welfare of the flock to managing grazing with conservation and biodiversity in mind, this is a varied and rewarding role at the heart of one of England’s most historic estates.

With accommodation and a vehicle provided, this is a unique opportunity to live and work in a beautiful historic landscape while playing an important role in the care of the Estate’s livestock and parkland.

Following the breakdown of the Defender Burghley Horse Trials site, please come and enjoy one of the most beautiful times of the year at Burghley. With free walk-in access and car parking, watch the deer herd roam, see nature transition into rich autumn colour and enjoy all walking routes open as normal.

Few people have had the chance to step inside Burghley House as the sun sets. Experience the State Rooms as you’ve never seen them before at Burghley by Twilight, 1–3 October, 6pm to 8pm each night.

An evocative journey back in time, these are three special evenings you simply can’t miss.

Marvel at magnificent frescoes and famous works of art, beautifully illuminated by soft lighting and atmospheric candlelight, while classical music drifts through the State Rooms.

Tickets are available for Thursday 1st, Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd October.

£30 per person, including Prosecco or a soft drink.

Ahhh… a little bit of calm following a brilliant four days at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials. If you’re still in town, come and discover Burghley in a whole new way, and step inside Burghley House and Gardens. 🏰✨

500 years of history and some of the finest works of art in the world inside the magnificent state rooms. Outside, two beautiful gardens to explore at your will. We’ve come back and the vibrant colours of our Dahlia borders have began to make an appearance. Always a favourite at this time of year! 🌸
