I have new pamphlets out - this interview with Sandy Moffat to mark his 80th birthday was a great pleasure.
The conversation was wide-ranging, taking in the effects on his own practice of teaching others, the relationship between portraitist and sitter, his distinctive use of colour, his identity as a Scottish artist and the responsibility of the artist. It was not entirely retrospective. The impression I was left with was of the artist entering his eighty-first year looking to the future, making plans for paintings still to be realised.

Precarious Passage by Issam Kourbaj, in the British Museum
Repurposed book and steel bicycle mudguards, extinguished matches and clear resin. 2016/2023.

My friend Jane, who's a British Museum Volunteer, took me through to see this incredibly moving work, explaining how former BM director Neil MacGregor chose 's 'Dark Water, Burning World' as his 101st object on the 10th anniversary of the publication of MacGregor's 'A History of the World in 100 Objects'.

Thank you, Jane

86 today

Lightroom at King's Cross - every city should have one, where you go in through a dark passageway to this dark hall the size of a school gym and you're completely surrounded by nature's colour and music and moving lines that become a picture just the way it was painted and there's an artist who's good at his job and been doing it for 60 years reminding you the world IS a beautiful place, "but you've got to look, you've got to really look" and you come out seeing the world differently.

Thank you David Hockney. Many happy returns of the day.

Skiddle: splash (a liquid), to sq**rt water about, cause a small splash or splutter, to spill, to dabble or potter in an aimless sort of way like a child playing with water Dictionaries of the Scots Language

One of my favourites in the Berthe Morisot exhibition. Morisot was married to the brother of the painter Manet. The large bowl depicted here was a gift from her brother-in-law in the Impressionists' milieu. It seems after Morisot's contemporaries stopped comparing her own work to the "feminine" works of Fragonard, they didn't know how to speak about her. She filled Manet's gift with water and studied her daughter and the concierge's daughter skiddling in it. Says a lot.

Children with a Bowl by Berthe Morisot, oil on canvas. 1886. On loan from Musee Marmotan Monet, Paris.

With Bashabi Fraser CBE after her inspiring talk in the Green Zone .... we await news from the Blue Zone as to what they've actually listened to from the world's peoples most affected by this climate emergency ... and no doubt it will emerge over time what governments got up to while all focus was on this situation

Our Story

The Junor Gallery specialises in contemporary Scottish and European fine art. A close relationship between the visual and literary arts is a feature, as well as an accompanying programme of events and workshops with each exhibition.

The physical Gallery on St Andrews’ South Street was a welcoming place for all, where all visitors were met by friendly, knowledgeable staff. The gallery has had to close it’s door on Monday 31st August, but continues online.

Keep an eye on my website and social media (Instagram and FB) for updates - short films will be posted soon. I’ll have a presence at Art Fairs and I look forward to seeing you again next Spring/Summer when I’ll have another superb exhibition in a different venue.

In the meantime, enjoy the exhibition on my website, from which you can purchase an artwork securely and have it safely delivered nationally or internationally. Don’t hesitate to email me about any aspect of your purchase.
