Stratford and Moreton Tramway Experience to Celebrate 200yrs.

From 9:30 on the morning of Saturday 5th September, join us at Cox's Yard for the VIP plaque unveiling and then travel in style by vintage bus along the olde tramway route. Saturday, 5th September at Moreton Show - The Cotswold Line Promotion Group (CLPG) celebrates Tramway200 as it will be 200yrs to the day since the Stratford to Moreton Railway was declared open. Tramway items will be on display and there are two short talks.

This verse was published in 1826 to celebrate the tramway opening. There is still time to polish your entry for the Tramway200 Verse Writing Competition and submit it by the bicentenary of Saturday, 5th September 2026.

The verse will be collected together in writing a chapter of local history, with select readings to feature on Sunday, 20th September at a Shipston Bookfest live poetry event in The White Horse in Shipston; tickets on sale. https://shipstonbookfest.org/events/2026/poetry-live

Keen eyes will notice that in Moreton at the Commemorative Plaque Unveiling, Lord Faulkner was holding a rather fine SMT200 Tramway book. This is a souvenir edition of just 100. On Saturday, 5th September members of the Tramway200 vintage bus party will each receive a complimentary copy.

Picture the scene 200 years ago as the inaugural train of horse-drawn tramway waggons departed Stratford-upon-Avon…

"Tuesday, 5th September 1826. The Committee, accompanied by a number of gentlemen in five covered carriages, preceded by a band of music, and followed by twenty-one waggons, laden with coals, timber, lime, and merchandize, set out from the wharf at Stratford at ten o’clock in the morning to travel towards Moreton-in-Marsh, sixteen and one quarter miles distant. The day was uncommonly fine."

To celebrate 1826-2026, a heritage t-shirt features G.W.R. Station Moreton-in-Marsh (c1910) when a passenger service operated along the Shipston Branch Line.

Bank Holiday Weekend means that Shipston Museum is open an extra day. Saturday to Monday (all 12 noon to 4pm).

Pop in to see the fabulous LEGO build of G.W.R. Station Shipston-on-Stour that celebrates Stratford to Moreton Tramway 200. A railway worker said: “we apologise for any inconvenience whilst we carry out these essential works to upgrade the base plates, but rest assured the works will be completed on time for the Moreton Show and way before HS2.”
