Thank you to everyone who came to our recent Coffee Morning.
We had a brilliant response and gathered loads of information about the history of Fore street.
Once we've catalogued all of the Fore Street information, our next project will be Queen Street and Sidmouth Street.
We'll have our next Coffee Morning in September, so get your photos of Queen Street and Sidmouth Street ready.

Just three days to go!

From 9am this Saturday (1 August), free tickets will become available for Cannington Viaduct Revisited – a unique opportunity to step onto the magnificent Cannington Viaduct for the first time in more than 60 years.

This special heritage weekend on 19 & 20 September will include:

* Guided walks to the viaduct.
* A heritage experience at Uplyme Village Hall with displays, films, refreshments and more - ideal for those not able to do the walk
* The chance to discover the story of one of the most remarkable surviving landmarks of the Axminster to Lyme Regis Railway.

Tickets are free but numbers are strictly limited. The viaduct is in a remote rural location, and access can only be managed safely in small stewarded groups. Limiting numbers will help protect both visitors and the site while ensuring everyone enjoys the best possible experience.

We expect demand to be high, so if you’d like to join us, please book as soon as tickets go live.

Booking opens at 9am on Saturday 1 August.

Volunteers at the museum have already been gathering information and pictures of the shops in Seaton and how they have changed over the years.

The response to the Ferris family story on Facebook confirms there is a huge amount of precious local knowledge which we feel should be recorded.

So we are launching a new ‘Talking History’ project to help preserve all the rich stories about Seaton town centre.

We will be organizing a coffee morning (or two?) with an open invitation to anyone who would like to come and chat about their memories of the town’s shops, starting with Fore St.

The first is on Friday 31st July at the Gateway, 10.30-12.30am. We look forward to seeing lots of you there!

We recently welcomed members of the Ferris family who came to look at their great grandfather's WW1 trenches diary, which is on display at the museum. It was wonderful hearing the century-old stories from his tiny pocket book.
The Ferris family once owned 'Ferris and Prescott's', the drapers shop on Queen St, where the police station is now, as seen in the 1920s/30s picture below.
Later that day our visitors made a long-lost connection with cousins on the museum's sister site, Seaton Memories.
If you have memories of the shop, we'd love to hear from you. We're starting a project to gather your memories and stories of the different shops in Seaton over the years, starting with Fore St. Hopefully, this will lead to an exciting new exhibition and some new history records 😊

Tomorrow is the anniversary of the sinking of the SS Arandora Star on 2nd July, 1940.
She was torpedoed soon after leaving Liverpool with heavy loss of life. Many of those killed were German and Italian internees, nearly 100 of whom had been held at Seaton Camp.

As National Volunteers Week draws to a close, I thought you'd like to see this lovely picture of Assistant Curator, Peter Thomas, receiving much deserved recognition for all his hard work and dedication at the museum. We nominated Peter for the Arts and Culture East Devon Volunteer of the Year Award. Together with other nominees he received a certificate on Wednesday at Kennaway House in Sidmouth. Well done, Pete! 🌟

Ahoy there, matey!
Seaton's Pirate festival was a fabulous event - congratulations to Seaton Chamber of Commerce!
We were delighted to do our bit with an Axe Valley Heritage Association talk at the URC on Saturday afternoon.
Local amateur historian, Claire Ross, gave us a fascinating insight into 'Pirates of the English Channel'. Thanks to Claire and everyone who came. 😁
We're taking a little break over the summer. Our next talk will be on the Vikings in Devon, in September.
