This Friday's Seaford Museum talk is “The history of the Red Arrows”, by Guy Bartlett ‘The Aeroplane Man’, Friday 14 August 2026 at the Little Theatre, Steyne Road. Doors open 6:30pm.
Red Arrows pilots are amongst the most highly-qualified and experienced within the Royal Air Force. During the display season the Red Arrows perform between 75 -85 air displays and more than 100 fly-pasts. Each pilot is hand-picked and only a very few will be given the privilege of representing the RAF both in the UK and abroad. Their Hawk aircraft are essentially the same as those used by the Advanced Flying Training students at Royal Air Force Valley, with the exception of smoke generators and a slightly uprated engine. Guy will share some of their history with you.

This Friday's Seaford Museum talk is "Droughts, deluges & dust devils – 350 years of S.E. weather”, by Ian Currie, "Weatherman," Friday 10 July 2026 at the Little Theatre, Steyne Road. Doors open 6:30pm.

Ian relates the stories of several centuries of weather with particular reference to SE England. From 7 metre high snowdrifts, cricket ball sized hail, blazing summers to violent tornadoes or devastating floods. Ian is a part-time weatherman, broadcaster, author, columnist, speaker and editor of Weather Eye magazine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.

Today 7th June 1913, the SS ELSWICK of Newcastle was entering Newhaven Harbour when a sudden squall 'slewed her athwart' onto the shore at Tide Mills. The Newhaven lifeboat and the tug 'Alert'. when to her aid but were not needed. The cargo was potatoes from France and it was unloaded before the ship was refloated. This was said to have been the first time for many years that a cargo was unloaded on the beach rather than in the harbour. (Photograph from the late Rosemary Holland's Collection)

150 years ago today - its Sports Day !

90 years ago today (17th May 1936) the Russian ship Ussuri bumped into the Esplanade at Seaford. The Captain declined the assistance of the Newhaven lifeboat and the ship managed to make its own way on the next high tide. While it was stranded on the beach, the crew chatted to sightseers and showed off the ships pet monkey. The only member of the crew to come ashore was the ship's cat. Pete’s Talk tells the fascinating story of how entertainment was used to boost morale during WWII, whether through the work of organisations such as ENSA and CEMA or companies established in POW camps .It remembers those people, who, during the darkest of times, remembered the motto of their profession; ‘tonight and every night, the show must go on’.
