✨ Upcoming Session! Help us shape Scarborough’s LGBTQ+ Heritage Toolkit 🏳️‍🌈

We are teaming up with writer and historian Kit Heyam to create a brand-new community guide dedicated to researching and preserving local LGBTQ+ history, and we want your voice to be a part of it.

To make this toolkit as useful, accessible, and meaningful as possible, we need your ideas. Can you spare a couple of hours on a Thursday evening to chat with us over a proper cup of tea?

We’d love to hear:

What you find most helpful in a heritage guide? What accessibility and sustainability mean to you?

And any personal experiences or insights you’d like to share...

Whether you’re a history buff or just want to support the community, everyone is welcome to join us.

📍 Where: Woodend Conference Room, Scarborough, YO11 2PW

📅 When: Thursday 23rd July, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

No need to book, just turn up. Looking forward to seeing you there!

🌻It’s been a hot summer so far🌻
and we’ve loved sharing our resource ‘Out of the Garden’ with you all.

Through collaging, creative writing and the creation of little mouse friends, we’ve been thinking about our 5 senses in the big outdoors.

If you don’t have a copy yet, we’ve been distributing free copies around Scarborough-such as The Market , The Mandy Apple collective venue, and This is Scarborough hub [to just name a few].

We still have some copies left - so feel free to send us a message and we can get them to you and the family to have fun this summer!

📖‘Dear Diary’ will be a fun, creative drop‑in inspired by much‑loved diary‑style books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks.📖

In partnership with Crescent Arts and The National Literacy Trust, local artist Jayne Shipley has created a collection of original, humorous characters in this style, displayed in the Glass Box to spark children’s imagination.

During their visit, children will explore the artwork and have a go at creating their own diary entries. Through a mix of art, storytelling and playful prompts, the session helps build confidence in writing and self‑expression, making it enjoyable for both reluctant and enthusiastic readers.

Each child will also receive a free book to take home, encouraging them to keep reading for pleasure.
We will also offer stories for younger children and offer a drop-in day for early years families (Thursday) to access story-telling resources for home and find out about story-times on the coast during the summer holidays.

Dates and times are:

Thursday 4th June, 11 am-3pm - Early Years family drop-in and book gifting

Friday 5th June, 3pm-5pm - Dear Diary after-school drop-in for 7–11-year-olds and book gifting

Saturday 6th June, 11 am-3pm - Dear Diary drop-in for 7–11-year-olds and book gifting

✨Throwback Thursday ✨ to when Jason Wilsher-Mills was beside the Scarborough sea!
Jason’s exhibition in 2024/25 was full of colour with larger-than-life characters filling the floors and walls of Woodend Gallery.
In light of our support of Town Of Culture, we continue having conversations with more amazing artists like Jason, and look forward to putting on more vibrant and engaging exhibitions!

“I felt so much joy when I exhibited there myself at Wood End gallery in 2024. I loved working there and have a great deal of respect for the team, as I was so fully supported as a disabled person and artist.
Scarborough should receive this huge accolade, because it is a magical town, which welcomes everyone and creates memories which last a lifetime,
There is a myth that says anything can happen in the place where the sky meets the sea. This is Scarborough.” - Jason Wilsher-Mills 2026
