Mather’s Wall is all that remains of MERZ ‘From Now to Then’ which is being taken down in anticipation of Matthew Collings’ ‘Drawings of Genocide’ and Jane Frere’s ‘Erasure’ exhibition. Come and listen to Matthew Collings speak about the drawings the Zionists don't want you to see.

What's the importance of these works? Why is it urgent to see this show? It's art, yes, but it's also a protest. Protesting against an art world that stands by and says nothing. High profile artists are protecting their money and reputation while Israel continues to commit genocide with impunity. How much longer can the art world hide this? These drawings are part of a turning point in history, which is why they challenge the narrative and the status quo. They must be seen in order to unlearn everything we've been taught and to encourage resistance in all its forms.

Over the same weekend Jane Frere’s work at MERZ reflects the furore around election manipulation, the rise of the extremist right, cultural cancellation and its chilling impact on arts organisations.

The increased erosion of freedom of speech and of critical thinking has been evident since Trump’s first election, alongside the Brexit gerrymandering and transnational collusion between politicians and business.

PLUS - the SCHOOL PRESS anti-racism wall of posters ‘recovered’ from the Mather’s pub wall in Edinburgh from the 1970s.

Coming to the Nithsdale Hotel in Sanquhar … P***y Riot is a Russian feminist protest and performance art group that became popular for its provocative punk rock music which later turned into a more accessible style. Founded in the fall of 2011 by the then 22-year-old Nadya Tolokonnikova, it has had a membership of approximately 11 women.The group staged unauthorized, provocative guerrilla gigs in public places.

These performances were filmed as music videos and posted on the internet. The group's lyrical themes included feminism, LGBTQ rights, opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, his policies and his links to the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church.

COMING UP … An exhibition at MERZ in Sanquhar (DG4 6DH) by four artists following their art, history and politics stories from 1976-2026. Reception on Friday 29th May at 5:00pm and open 11:00-4:00 on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May. Other dates to be announced based around talks and film screenings until the exhibition closes on 23rd June.

OPEN CALL: MERZ mail art EXHIBITION 2026

But is it? When the absurd becomes today’s reality what still remains to be ‘preposterous’?

The 2026 MERZ mail art EXHIBITION will try and celebrate what might still be preposterous … contrary to reason or common sense; utterly absurd or ridiculous … you just couldn’t believe it was possible!!

Within a year the world has been turned upside down and every which way - so might a profusion of new absurdity and ridiculousness help turn the world right side up?

On a postcard measuring - 105 × 148 mm (4.13 × 5.82 inches), or the slightly larger US postcard at 4 × 6 inches (101.6 × 152.4 mm) - make a collage, painting or drawing or a combination and add words that conjure up something so absolutely ridiculous that it could never ever be believed to become reality.

Each artist’s card will be given to a group of local children in Sanquhar for them to try and imagine making these absurdities real.

Exhibition of the postcards by artists and the response cards by local kids will be on display at MERZ over the Easter weekend in April 2026.

A selection of the combined works will go on display at the second Sanquhar International Art Festival in November 2026.

Launch of the animation ‘Becoming Hannah Höch’ and the book on analytic conceptual art ‘Art as Conceit’ at the reception for the first Sanquhar International Art Festival. The weekend festival featured artists, writers and filmmakers from the US, Romania, Australia and Japan several of whom had been on residencies at MERZ for one to three months to work on their exhibitions and the animation. Thanks to all guests and participants for bringing the Festival together at the Nithsdale Hotel.

Here, Josie Liang, a stop motion animator from Taipei is working on the stop motion portion of Becoming Hannah Höch. Josie uses tweezers to adjust just one part of the paper puppet figures without accidentally moving the whole puppet. The exaggerated reactions are meant to bring humour to ongoing and ever changing demand in the 1920s and ‘30s on what a woman should look like. An exhibition of making this animation will be open on Sunday 30th from 1-4:00pm at the Museum of Model Art where Daria will provide a hands on workshop to make animations with the praxinoscope.
