Land of Iron

Land of Iron A state-of-the-art visitor attraction exploring the industrial heritage of Teesside. Open now. He collected all the memorabilia he could.

Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is an independent museum celebrating the heritage of the ironstone mining industry. In the 1950s, whist reporting on the ironstone mine closures, Tom Leonard, a local newspaper reporter, became acutely aware remains of the ironstone mining industry were rapidly being lost. In 1978, the Museum was founded to house Tom’s collection and to celebrate the legacy of the

industry through the preservation, conservation and display of related artefacts, photographs and documents.

It’s Volunteers’ Week, and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who gives their time, skills and energy to Land of Iron.

Our volunteers support us in countless ways, from welcoming visitors and taking them on guided tours, to helping with collections, events, learning activities, fundraising, maintenance and the many behind-the-scenes jobs that keep the museum running smoothly.

Many of our volunteers bring their own stories, knowledge and family connections to the ironstone mining heritage of East Cleveland, making them a vital part of the museum experience.

Quite simply, Land of Iron couldn’t open and operate as we do without them.

Volunteering is also about people and connection. As one of our volunteers, Anne, said recently, one of the best parts is “friendship.” Peter, who has volunteered with us since 2008, shared that he’s still here because he enjoys it so much.

That really says a lot about the spirit of our volunteer team.

To all our current volunteers and everyone who has supported Land of Iron over the years: thank you. You help keep East Cleveland’s ironstone heritage alive for visitors, families, schools and the wider community.

If you’re interested in volunteering with us, please complete our volunteer form here:

The doors to our permanent exhibition are open once again.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been working on new displays and updates across the gallery, and visitors can now explore the refreshed exhibition as work continues.

There are still more additions and finishing touches to come over the next few weeks, and we’d like to thank everyone for their patience and support while the work has been taking place.

Happy International Museum Day! 🏛️

Today we’re celebrating the important role museums play in bringing people, stories and communities together.

At Land of Iron, we’re proud to help share the history, heritage and voices of this part of East Cleveland — from the story of ironstone mining and the people behind it, to the wider history that shaped our area.

We’re also pleased to say that our permanent exhibition is open again, with work continuing behind the scenes as we keep developing and improving the experience for visitors.

And while you’re here, you can also see our temporary exhibition, From Neolithic Salt to a Saxon Princess with Dr Steve Sherlock, on display until 4 July.

If you’ve not visited for a while, this is a great time to come and see the museum for yourself.

Land of Iron welcomes new on-site defibrillator thanks to local support.

A big thank you to Ian Wilson, Rotary Club of Redcar, Peter Appleton, and everyone who helped support the arrival of a new defibrillator at Land of Iron.

The new unit is now located in reception, giving us a central point of access if it is ever needed in an emergency.

Land of Iron takes safety very seriously, from regular checks and training to wider emergency planning across the site. Having a defibrillator here is another important step in helping us make the museum as safe and prepared as possible for visitors, volunteers and staff.

Ian is a long-standing Land of Iron volunteer, Chairman of Redcar Rotary Club, and has been involved with the museum for more than 30 years. We’re very grateful for his continued support, and for the Rotary Club’s donation of £500.

We’d also like to thank Peter Appleton, Land of Iron volunteer, who stepped in to help with the remaining balance.

It’s a practical addition, but an incredibly important one.

Thank you to everyone involved.
