Land of Iron

Land of Iron A state-of-the-art visitor attraction exploring the industrial heritage of Teesside. Open now. He collected all the memorabilia he could.

Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is an independent museum celebrating the heritage of the ironstone mining industry. In the 1950s, whist reporting on the ironstone mine closures, Tom Leonard, a local newspaper reporter, became acutely aware remains of the ironstone mining industry were rapidly being lost. In 1978, the Museum was founded to house Tom’s collection and to celebrate the legacy of the

industry through the preservation, conservation and display of related artefacts, photographs and documents.

🦇 JUST OVER A WEEK UNTIL OUR FIRST BAT WALK!

What does Skinningrove sound like after dark?

Join Land of Iron and Cleveland Bat Group on Saturday 12 September for the first of three special autumn Bat Walks.

We’ll begin at the museum with a short introduction to the bats found in our local area. Then, as darkness falls, we’ll head out into Skinningrove with specialist bat-detection equipment to listen for and identify the different calls made by bats moving through the landscape.

Our first walk is coming up soon:

📅 Saturday 12 September 2026
🕖 7pm–approximately 8.30pm
📍 Meet at Land of Iron, Skinningrove
🎟️ £10 per person, plus an online booking fee

Places are limited and tickets must be booked in advance, so don’t leave it too late to reserve your place.

Can’t make the first date? Two further Bat Walks will take place this autumn:

🦇 Saturday 19 September — 6.45pm
🦇 Saturday 31 October — 5pm

Each date is a separate event.

Please wear warm clothing and suitable footwear, bring a waterproof jacket and leave dogs at home. The walking route is fully accessible.

Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.

🌱 Home-grown plants are helping to grow funds for Land of Iron!

Our volunteers—and their friends and families—regularly bring in spare plants and cuttings they’ve grown at home, ready to find new homes while supporting the museum.

There’s no fixed price, but we suggest a donation of around £2 per plant. Every penny raised goes directly towards helping to keep Land of Iron open.

You’ll find outdoor plants near Reception, with houseplants available inside. We’d also be delighted to receive suitable plant donations from local residents and visitors.

The LAST Fossil Hunting session of Summer 2026 🐚

Our team have had an amazing summer fossil hunting on the Skinningrove coastline — and now there’s just one session left.

Join us on Friday 28 August, 10am to 12pm, for the final Fossil Hunting adventure of the summer with Land of Iron.

Search the shore with our staff and volunteers to find fossils, ironstone and other interesting finds on a beach that was once home to millions of prehistoric creatures, far beneath a tropical sea.

This session has been timed so that it finishes at low tide, giving us the best chance to explore the shore safely.

Tickets are £4 per child, plus online booking fee. Accompanying parents or guardians go free.

Equipment is provided, but please bring wellies or suitable footwear. If it is sunny, remember to bring sun cream.
