Woolworths opened in Salisbury in the autumn of 1927. Then, there was a road with zebra crossing running past with flashing yellow light.

The Woolworths ad said that every town needed a Woolworth (Now every town needs a Range) why haven't we got one?

Woolies as it was affectionatly known, sold everything from meat, TV's, furniture to garden assessories. The shop closed and has now been turned into a New Look store.

Many victorian houses in Salisbury had outside toilets, they smelled, doors blew open in the wind, and they were my worst nightmare.

Can anyone remember these please?

I have heard that some still exist in Sydney street, but most have now been made into storage spaces.

I have seen a lot of change at the old George Mall. These were taken before the area was revamped beyond recognition. Does anyone else remember when it looked like this? There used to be a toyshop where Nationwide is now, and a cakeshop where Greggs is.

Please feel free to add your own memories :)

How many of us recall Fisher Price toys as children? The first picture is of the activity centre. Once strapped to cots via the slats, it kept babies of the day amused (I should think) for age's. I think health and safety wouldn't allow this to be fixed to the sids of cots nowadays.

If you wern't allowed a real dog, Snoopy was your next best thing, well at least you din't have to clean up after him, and he didn't, smell.

Sounding like a Morris dancer with St Vitus dance, the Turquoise Roly Poly Chime Ball dates from 1967.

Last but not least. The garage was for all the little car enthusiasts (who probably screetch round the roads in real cars today). This was every boys dream (to have a toy garage, not screetch round the roads)

Anyone remember the small people?

Not very exciting I know, but this area is by the Butts meadows. The area has been like this for centuries and should never be built on.

This gelding has a lovely view over peaceful countryside. Does anyone know this horse please?

This is an old drovers road that I suspect runs all the way from blandford to Salisbury and beyond. It's now very overgrown but would have been very busy with cattle on market days which are Saturday and Tuesday. The track runs by Salisbury District hospital.

The market was originally in the centre of Salisbury. Hence the names Butcher Row, Oatmeal Row and Paultry Cross. Once when the market square stones were taken up, you could see the holes where the pens were fixed to the ground.

If you can add anymore information about the old drovers road etc, please feel free to let me know and I can add it to the page.

Not many pictures of Salisbury cattle market in Ashley Road exist, not any in colour that I know of. So I have added some of my own, there a bit faded but you can see what they are.

The first picture is where the big lorries used to come (stinking of pigs, sheep etc) very early in the morning. The livestock market began in Salisbury market square before moving to Ashley road. Here they also had the driving school, I remember the small road signs and zebra crossings painted on the road.

The last photo is where they sold the rabbits, hens etc. Here we would play on roller skates and boards. The livestock market is now along The Netherhampton Road.

I will add more photos soon. Please feel free to comment with your memories of the livestock market.

First photo is the auction booth at the Livestock market. I remember as kids we used to play in here (probably shouldn't have done). The door used to squak really loudly and it echoed, really loudly.

I often wondred what happend to these people from 1980. This is the beauty about capturing the past, traditions and fashions change and this is caught forever as we move on.

This lamp post by St Michael’s church is the only surviving streetlight dating from the 1940's and possibly before. Now showing it's age, it was probably built well before Bemerton Heath estate ever existed. A lot of streetlights are now being replaced with metal versions, it is now very rare to find streetlights made out of concrete.

If you good people out there can add anymore information about this, I will add it to the page.
