In 2013 we celebrated our centenary following the original bequest by Edwin Young that established the original gallery in 1913. In our centenary year we were successful with a grant from the Arts Council England South West for a project called preSENSE which aims to develop our audiences and raise awareness for the gallery through a programme of new exhibitions and innovative participatory arts programmes inspired by the art collections and working with target communities including, families, the military and older people. This project will further support us to redevelop the galleries to provide permanent exhibitions which both mark the life and achievements of both Edwin Young and John Creasey and provide access to the collections held by the Edwin Young and John Creasey Museum Trusts in new and exciting ways. There are five art collections held at the Young Gallery including:

Have you met George yet? 👋

🎨 You can find him in Gallery 2, as part of the Drawing Together: The Bath Academy of Art at Corsham exhibition.

🧑‍🎨George is an artist’s mannequin, or lay figure, which was bequeathed to the Bath Academy of Art by the artist Walter Sickert. He was later nicknamed ‘George’. He is made from wood and metal and has articulated limbs. George was an artist’s tool, and it is believed that Sickert used the figure while staging his painting The Raising of Lazarus (1928-29).

📍Michael Pennie Gallery at Bath Spa University (5 March - 11 April 2027).

🔻Join artist Emma Kerr, ‘Trial and Error’ for a free drop-in creative workshop inspired by the Drawing Together exhibition in Gallery 2, featuring a play space with PlayBuildPlay from 2pm-3pm.

🔹Let’s make a vibrant studio together, an art space for all where we will celebrate our creativity. Activities will include patchwork pictures (collage), still life zone (drawing) and a stripy stuff option (mixed media). A play mat for sensory play will also be available from 2pm-3pm.

🔶 Suitable for adults, families and children of all ages. Please note children must be accompanied by their responsible adult throughout the workshop. We will be photographing the event and will have an opt out process in place.

We’ve loved seeing your responses to the Drawing Together Exhibition!

In Gallery 2, find artworks from Bath Spa University Collections, Chippenham Museum and The Young Gallery displayed together for the first time. Featuring painting, photography, print and sculpture, from artists including Gillian Ayres, William Scott and Walter Sickert, the exhibition explores teaching, learning, creative practice and everyday life at the Academy.

Painting Studio, by Roger Mayne, Photographic print, 1957, Bath Spa University Collections
Portrait of Sally Brine, by William Scott, Oil on canvas, About 1950, Chippenham Museum

The exhibition is free to visit and no booking is required. It will be displayed in Gallery 2 at the Young Gallery until 21 November 2026, before moving to Chippenham Museum.

Join us for the Field Notes Community and Public Art Talk, an evening talk about the importance of community and public art. 🎨

You are invited to join Leigh Chalmers from Wessex Archaeology, local artist Sue Martin and the four Public Artists who have been commissioned to create public art for the Wilton Gate housing development in Harnham. The artists are:
Harriet Mead
Michael Lawrence
Phil Bews
Sebastien Boyesen

A short talk from each of the artists will be followed by a Q&A with time afterwards to look around the exhibiton, Field Notes of Harnham.
