Before and after framing in flat oak - Bryan Wynter ‘Landscape with Thistle’ 1947; ink & wash, previously owned by the artist Denis Mitchell. Wynter was a founder member of the Crypt Group, a breakaway group of young artists formed in St Ives in 1946. He lived at The Carn, an isolated cottage with no mains water or electricity high up on Zennor Moor. Inspired by the elements and their action in changing the landscape, Wynter experimented with various forms of expression to convey images unfettered by familiarity. His work was initially neo romantic in nature (as in this example) before becoming more abstract following his exposure to developments in European and American art in the 1950s.

Paul Nash ‘Untitled’ (Garden View) watercolour & pencil, signed bottom right

I often frame works after they have been restored and it’s always incredible to see the difference conservation can make. In this example of a watercolour by Paul Nash, it had been extremely time stained and the paper had become so brown the subtlety of the drawing and the colour was completely masked by poor condition before conservation. Now the picture has a new life, it will form part of a show by Belgrave St Ives / Fine Art in the future.

A couple of Sven Berlin pen & ink wash drawings window mounted and framed in natural obeche + oak. Berlin had a deep empathy with the natural world illustrated in his spirited depictions of fauna and foliage.
