Audley End is one of England’s grandest stately homes; in addition to the spectacular house, visitors today can explore the Victorian Service Wing complete with kitchen, laundries and a dairy. There's also the recently restored historic stables, complete with resident horses and Victorian groom.

🐴 It's Stables Saturday! 🐴

And just like that the horses are now enjoying their summer fields! The stables team have had a busy week tidying paddocks, re-arranging fencing so our amazing Audley horses can enjoy their summer fields. Keep your eye out for the horses enjoying their summer fields sunshine while wearing their fly protection! 🐴❤️

From plots to pots… 🌱🪴

☔️ Despite a challenging start to the season — from late frosts and an early heatwave, to this week’s heavy rain showers and low pressure — there’s been no slowing down in the Kitchen Garden at Audley End. There’s certainly no end of garden fun and games at the moment!

🧅 Angi has been busy planting onions and refreshing pot displays around the garden, Kelly filling the large vinery pots ready for the season ahead, and Gary hard at work planting in the brassica cage.

🌱 With teamwork, patience, and a watchful eye on the ever-changing weather, the garden is steadily taking shape. We’re looking forward to seeing it grow fuller and more abundant week by week as the season unfolds. 🌿

🌸 Orchids are blooming at Audley End! We have a carpet of Common Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) beneath oak trees close to the Parterre. Grass is sparse in this area and Yellow Rattle has helped create space for these orchids to thrive. Now is the time to come and enjoy their fleeting display. Elsewhere on site we have Bee Orchids (Ophrys apifera) popping up – sometimes in the most unexpected places like the bark mulch under our espaliered trees in the Kitchen Garden). There is also a small colony of Southern Marsh Orchids (Dachylorhiza praetermissa) close to Place Pond! 🌸

🌸 The UK is home to around 57 native orchid species with many living on chalky or limestone meadows and grasslands! 🌸

🌷 Exciting news! This summer the Ornamental Team have collaborated with Fothergills Seed and Plant suppliers, who are based near Newmarket! 🌷

Sam and Sarah have created a beautiful design for the five courtyard annual beds that includes cosmos coleus nicotiana osteospermum and lobelia!

The Fothergills social media team have been keeping in touch about our progress! From the propagation stage to the initial planting out, all aspects of the process have been well documented!

As well as our English Heritage volunteers, we were joined last tuesday by four more volunteers from the Charles River Laboratory, who were a great help in getting the design completed to high standard!

This included a first showing of Anna’s fantastic new display board. Very satisfying for all concerned! 🌷🌸
