Join us on Saturday 19 September, 10am-1pm, in the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site area of Pendeen, for a walk and talk by archaeoastronomer, Carolyn Kennett, and history and folklore enthusiast, Elizabeth Dale.

As part of the Mapping the Past for the Future project activity, we will be rambling through Pendeen to Carn Eanes, Trewellard Common and Carn Kenidjack, looking at the incredibly diverse features of this ancient landscape, from Bronze Age monuments to mining heritage and folktales, covering thousands of years of Cornish history in just a few miles.

Please note - this is a moderate walk, with uneven ground, hills, stiles and a small section of road walking. The walk is approximately 3 miles and is not suitable for young children.

Places are limited so booking is essential and everyone attending needs their own ticket.

Volunteer at Awenek! We need your help.

We’re looking for volunteers to help at Awenek! The Great Cornish Heritage Festival on Saturday 12th September at Enys Gardens, Penryn. In return, you’ll receive a free full‑day festival ticket for just a half‑day of support.

Awenek celebrates Cornwall’s living heritage — the stories, skills, language, music and traditions that have shaped our communities for generations and continue to evolve today. Expect Bronze Age axe‑making, Medieval battles, traditional crafts, Kernewek, shanties, storytelling and hands‑on activities for all ages.

If you’ve visited or volunteered before, you’ll know how special the day is – and how much it relies on the brilliant people who give their time. If you’ve got a few hours to spare and want to explore, enjoy and support everything that makes Cornwall special, we’d love to hear from you.

Volunteer roles include supporting set‑up, assisting with activities and helping visitors find their way around the gardens.

🚶‍♀️⛏️🌿 Step into Cornwall's rich past on this fascinating guided walk.

🥾 Hosted by the Archives and Cornish Studies Service team, this guided walk and talk on Saturday 19 September, from 10am to 1pm, explores the rich archaeological, industrial and folklore heritage of the St Just area within Area A1 of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

Led by archaeoastronomer Carolyn Kennett and history and folklore enthusiast Elizabeth Dale, the walk will take participants from Pendeen to Carn Eanes, Trewellard Common and Carn Kenidjack. Along the route, they will uncover the stories behind an extraordinary range of landscape features, from Bronze Age monuments and archaeological remains to mining heritage sites and enduring local folktales. Covering thousands of years of Cornish history within just a few miles, the walk offers a unique opportunity to experience the many layers of heritage that make this landscape so remarkable.

🗺️ Part of the Mapping the Past for the Future project, the event celebrates Cornwall's historic landscapes and the stories embedded within them. The project is working to increase access to Cornwall's historic manorial maps by digitising and geo-referencing them, bringing together archive collections, historic environment data and community engagement to help people discover and better understand Cornwall’s past.

It’s Monday! 🥳🗺️ Last week we were delighted to take a group onto Bodmin moor for a walk and talk around Carburrow Tor to learn more about the manor of Warleggan. 👞🚶‍♀️

We were joined by one of our project partners, Cornwall National Landscape, and we were given a guided tour by landowner John Keast.

The walk took us through an ancient prehistoric landscape, we learnt about Bronze Age cairns, discussed medieval and post medieval manorial life and then looked at copies of manorial maps and documents, some of which are shown here. Warleggan, known as Warth-la-gan or higher place on the downs, was once described as the loneliest place on Bodmin Moor, but from what we have learnt about its hidden landscape, it was full on life.

It’s Monday and later today we’ll be taking to Bodmin Moor for the first of our outdoor manor maps activities – a walk and talk near Warleggan Common. Tickets for this event booked up fast, but last we looked, there were one or two left on our Ticket Tailor page…

Don’t worry if you miss it though, we’ll be hosting further walks around Penwith and Redruth over the coming months. We’re also busy planning some events at Kresen Kernow later this year, including a pop-up exhibition, talks, family activities and public training sessions for when the digital maps are available online.
