Check out these Reading Festival posters from 1978, 1992 and 2021. Recognise any of the headliners? Which year would you like to attend?

The Festival originally started in 1951 as a Jazz Blues and Rock Festival. Charlie XCX is one of this year's headliners.

Games have been found at the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, near Silchester in Hampshire, in the form of playing grids along with dice and disc-shaped counters. This square floor tile is a games board, divided into forty-nine small squares by six horizontal and six vertical lines. These artefacts tell us about some of the games that were played, but we have no way of knowing about any that leave no trace such as ‘paper, rock, scissors’ and ‘tag’.

This is a group of five ancient Egyptian amuletic figures, provenance unknown. A hand, two legs, a fish and a figure of the god Bes.

Amulets are objects that are believed to have certain positive properties that can be magically transferred to their owner. In ancient Egypt this magical power was often derived from a combination of several aspects, such as the amulet’s shape, material, decoration, colour, inscription as well as words spoken over the objects or acts performed with them. They were usually placed upon, or worn, on the body to allow transfer of their powers straight to the owner. Pierced amulets such as these meant they could be worn as pendants on a necklace.

On Saturday 12th and Saturday 19th September, join one of our popular Abbey Quarter Tours for free as part of Heritage Open Days 2026!

This tour will lead you on a discovery of the history and heritage of Reading's Abbey Quarter including the Hospitium where medieval pilgrims stayed, the impressive Reading Abbey Ruins, and the links of Reading with Jane Austen. We will give you exclusive access to the Abbey Gateway, the building that was once part of the school where Jane Austen studied and lived as a girl.

The celebrates its centenary this year. Here’s a photo of students in 1945 walking in the cloisters of the London Road campus. Students came from the town, the surrounding area and from all over the country. There were five residential halls, two for men and three for women. At the time of this photo female students outnumbered male students.
