Polegate Windmill Polegate Windmill was built in 1817 and powered by wind until 1942. Restored in 1965 with internal machinery intact.

Polegate Windmill was built in 1817 and worked by wind up until 1942, then electrically driven to one set of stones until 1962. Heritage Lottery funded repairs to brickwork and cap carried out in 2004/5. Sadly, the timber supports in the tower are in a very poor state and most of the floors are now supported on Acrow props. This means we cannot allow any public access to the tower but the mill museum on the ground floor is still open to visitors.

I couldn't be at the mill today for our open Sunday but by all accounts it was a great success.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for keeping refreshments going and to Nicki Watts, Jacqueline Marsh and the Jackettes for bringing music and poetry into the mill.

Just a reminder that it's our October open day this Sunday from 11am to 3pm at the mill.
We have Jacqueline Marsh with Lindsay and Lynn singing songs from various decades. Nicki Watts will be reading her poetry and rhymes too.
Please pop in for tea & cake and a look around our milling museum...

Windmill Wednesday and Trevor was sanding the office door as now the dry weather is over, things are swelling! Steve was mowing the grass before it rained.
I also photographed our two stone nuts, an original wooden one and the only cast iron gear in the mill.

I nearly forgot about last Wednesday so here's some photos of the "1862" stones that were the last pair to grind grain in our mill.
It's interesting that they were driven from underneath by a motor, presumably bolted to the ground floor, after the mill couldn't be driven by wind during WW2.

Windmill Wednesday and after a committee meeting, we had another visit from Bertha Ovenden, the daughter of our last miller, Albert Ovenden. Bertha was born in 1935 and although she has dementia, as soon as she walks back into the mill, she is back there as a young girl, sleeping in the tower when there were air raids!
