We are excited to be a part of Visual Arts South West's new Make Space pilot programme alongside Plymouth Culture and Spike Island.

Make Space aims to unlock spaces within arts organisations, offering artists the opportunity to test and reflect on their work. South West-based artists are encouraged to apply to use KARST’s gallery and project space, and Spike Island’s residency space. This is a great opportunity for artists to step back, critically review progress, document pieces professionally, and invite feedback from peers.

Next month, join us for a show by KARST’s volunteers: What’s a Home When You’re Leaving So Soon? 🏠

Curated by Nis Murat, the works on show explore what home means to the featured artists. The show centres around each artist’s distinct sense of what it means to belong and how inclusion and acceptance can be found in times of uncertainty and instability.

Featuring work by Dana Aala, AS•I•AM, Sally Clark, Nis Murat, Ainsley Robinson, Leah Rowcliffe, Farrah Seyedi and Lucy Claire Walker.

I THINK THIS IS WHERE I LIVE
Jess Scott

KARST studio holder Jess Scott is an artist and filmmaker whose work is centred around the audience and rooted in the storytelling tradition. Experimenting with photography and film, Scott explores how we record and are recorded, and how we view and are viewed, ideas that are integral to her practice. The artist’s work is often autobiographical, allowing her to observe her own place in the world whilst sharing personal experiences to create connections with her audience.

KARST x KIND is a long-standing collaboration with Studio-KIND. in Barnstaple, encouraging artistic collaboration across North Devon and Plymouth. I Think This is Where I Live is the fourth solo show brought to Studio KIND by a KARST studioholder before going on to show at KARST.

Last month, Hannah Scott presented her new work, Carbon Copy, developed during her month-long self-directed residency at KARST. Take a look! 👀

Hannah says: “During my KARST, Ben Borthwick (KARST’s Head of Programme) and I talked about how Giotto and Van Gogh used the colour blue for their starry skies. About how they were probably taking part in the same timeless conversation – to look out at infinity and contemplate the amazement of it all, of life, of the universe. The wonder. Although the religious context, our scientific understanding, and the edges of our knowledge have shifted, the wonder remains the same. When I look inside the human body, I get that wonder – the cleverness of it all.”

If you’re in Exeter, head over to Traction Project Space where KARST studio-holder Laura Hopes is showing their work, PORTALS.

Laura says: “I’ve been making with land in mind for a long time, considering how place imprints itself onto us, but also how it has been carved and shaped by humans. Land-scaping, literally sculpting land, is vivid in the stone of quarries and mines, ditches and furrows in fields, canals and leats… PORTALS materially combines my fascination with these themes above and below ground – the mineral absences of an industrial sublime with the present remnants of a thatched farm on the North Cornish coast.”

📣 STUDIO NEWS 📣

This August, Joseph Winsborrow will be joining us as a short-term studio holder, undertaking a two month-long, self-directed residency at KARST.

Joseph is an artist and curator whose practice explores witchcraft, folklore, regional history, and speculative myth-making within the South West of England. Drawing on research into personal histories, rural heritage, and identity, his work traces overlooked narratives and reimagines forgotten cultural traditions. Working across sculpture, print, text, and performance, he approaches making as a meditative process that connects material experimentation with embodied research.

Joseph says: “This residency comes at an exciting point in my practice as I rebuild my connections and relationships across the South West. After living in Nottingham and London for the past twelve years, I am looking forward to returning to Devon to dedicate time to material experimentation within KARST’s vibrant artistic community. I hope to develop a more site-responsive practice, drawing inspiration from the landscapes, histories, and folklore of the region while building lasting connections with fellow artists and organisations.”
