🐋 STUDIO NEWS 🐋

Later this week, KARST studio holder, Sam Machell, will present his new show at 37 Looe Street.

Battle of the Dying of the Light is a piece of ambient, durational theatre that imagines the co**se of a whale on the ocean floor as a war-torn battlefield. 37 Looe Street will host a changing display of drawings and scenography, made visible and invisible by shifting light and colour. Alongside the exhibition there will be a schedule of performances, streams and screenings.

👨🏿‍🚀 Larry Achiampong’s Relic 4 at KARST (6-9pm)

Larry Achiampong’s new film, Relic 4 (2026), revisits the cinematic universe of the Relic Traveller series after a six-year hiatus. Exploring themes of fallen empire, class, and displacement, Achiampong interrogates the structures and residues of colonialism.

🌱 Chantal Powell’s SEEDBED at MIRROR (5-7pm)

An exhibition exploring cultivation, transformation and renewal through ceramic and glass, drawing on alchemy, ancient rituals and Jungian psychology.

👥 There is Only Ever Now at Cafe Momus (6-8pm)

A group show organised by Red Mud Art’s artists’ critique group as part of Plymouth Art Weekender. Including work by Baraka Ali, Emma Allan, Hagar Basis, Warren Clayburn, Jordan Eastwood, Alon Gershtein, Tom Orr, PJEJ, Gemma Quickened, Sheila Riley, Shelley Saxon, Ruth Helen Smith and Jules Smith.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with exhibition invigilation, flyer distribution, and installation and deinstallation of shows.

On Thursday 22 October (3pm) we will be hosting an informal volunteer information session where our Volunteer Coordinator will give a tour of the gallery and tell you about the volunteer experience at KARST.

📣 STUDIO NEWS 📣

We are excited to share that KARST studio holder Cylena Simonds is featured in Exeter Contemporary Open 2026.

Perpetual Near Riot (2025) is part of a series inspired by Br’er Rabbit’s declaration: “Fool, I was born and bred in a briar patch”. The work considers the phrase in relation to Cylena's childhood experiences in Detroit and the racial and economic tensions she witnesses in Plymouth today.

Exeter Contemporary Open is an annual exhibition, selected from hundreds of entries, submitted by artists from across the UK.

OPENING NEXT MONTH ⬇️

Larry Achiampong will debut his new film, Relic 4, as part of his upcoming exhibition at KARST.

After a six-year hiatus, Relic 4 revisits the cinematic universe of Achiampong’s Relic Traveller series. The film reunites audiences with the Voyager character from Relic 1 (2017) as he continues his time-travel journey. Exploring themes of fallen empire, class, and displacement, Achiampong interrogates the structures and residues of colonialism, posing fundamental questions such as: what and who is shaping history, and whose traces are deemed worthy of preservation?

Relic 4 is supported by the British Council.

Next week, Joseph Winsborrow will present work created during their two month-long, self-directed residency at KARST.

Joseph says: "My time on the KARST residency felt like a time of rooting. I returned to the South West after many years away, and having the time and space of a studio was monumental in reigniting my practice in the region. It has felt much like a running stream, with the water branching out into new and unexpected channels. I am leaving the residency with many more ideas than when I started, alongside new connections and relationships with practitioners across the region."

We are excited to be a part of Visual Arts South West's new Make Space pilot programme alongside Plymouth Culture and Spike Island.

Make Space aims to unlock spaces within arts organisations, offering artists the opportunity to test and reflect on their work. South West-based artists are encouraged to apply to use KARST’s gallery and project space, and Spike Island’s residency space. This is a great opportunity for artists to step back, critically review progress, document pieces professionally, and invite feedback from peers.

Next month, join us for a show by KARST’s volunteers: What’s a Home When You’re Leaving So Soon? 🏠

Curated by Nis Murat, the works on show explore what home means to the featured artists. The show centres around each artist’s distinct sense of what it means to belong and how inclusion and acceptance can be found in times of uncertainty and instability.
