Online Ceramics went live in October 2010, at a time when buying studio pottery online was still a relatively new idea. To mark the sixteenth anniversary, Peter Ward looks back at how the business began.
“When I launched Online Ceramics, it was a nervous time. It had only been a couple of years since the global financial crisis, and I had no idea whether the website would succeed. Many potters I spoke to thought it would not work because customers needed to ‘hold the pot’ before deciding to buy it.
“Fortunately, several influential potters, including Emmanuel Cooper, Walter Keeler and John Pollex, were enthusiastic about the idea and quickly came on board. Even so, it took six weeks from the website going live to make the first sale.
“My research during the summer of 2010 suggested that only 2% of collectors had bought ceramics online, although more than 20% said they would consider doing so. I believed there was a market for buying studio pottery online, and thankfully other people shared that enthusiasm. Sales gradually grew, and I would love to know what those figures would look like if the same survey were carried out today.”
