"Deep in the Woods", Red Fox - 24 x 32 inches, Oil on Panel
I feel the atmosphere is coming together nicely now.

Its been a challenging year; my personal circumstances have changed and much of the year has been spent adapting to this. After a long marriage with Jill and I decided to separate amicably and so begins a new passage in both our lives. Jill will continue to sell prints of my artwork through Aquila Art Limited

Most of the last six months have been taken up with finding another home, moving in and preparing for creative work. I'm getting there and now have a functioning studio and paintings on the wall. Its feeling more like a like home everyday. My Home Studio / Gallery (Open by Appointment) is situated in Pitlochry.

"Deep in the Wood", Red Fox
24 x 32 inches, Oil on Panel
Apologies for the quiet page. This painting has been both on and off the easel for a while. My year has been far from the usual as I've undergone a complete relocation. It's been a bit sad leaving Comrie, but I think there are plenty of wonderful opportunities to explore around my new base. For those not on my mailing list who didn't get my email newsletter a couple months ago I'll update you over further messages.

Mock-up for a painting of August red grouse in flowering purple heather. Some green mosses and a few straw coloured grasses. Pale grey rocks and of course the red-brown of the grouse themselves.
It will be an oil painting 24 x 32 inches.

Idea for a roe buck painting. I'm fortunate that our garden backs onto a mature woodland. This is a little mock-up for a roe deer and silver birches oil painting.

It's not been the best light this week, but I can't resist a couple of hours of observation.

Stag of the day just as it was going dark. One of the best I've seen this season. Real shame he didn't turn up earlier.

Scottish Glens are reverberating with the sound of red deer stags roaring at the moment.

It's a busy time for stags. They loose quite a bit of weight with all the chasing around.

200 deer on the side of the mountain. Here are some of the 100 or so stags. Three stags were rutting, holding groups of hinds and working pretty hard to keep them, but this lot are yet to get involved.

It's that season again, when I scamper about on the hills gathering new ideas for red deer paintings. A week ago there was a main herd of over 200 animals but now the herd is fragmenting and the roaring reverberates around the glens.

Drawing on paper further edited with photoshop software to create a mock-up for presentation to a client.
It is late in the day, perhaps late autumn or early spring. I’m thinking a little soft mist in the distance to give depth. A yellow light from the left catching the sides of trees and the fox.
Perhaps some winter beech tree leaves still on the branches of some trees to introduce the colours of the fox to different parts of the painting. I think that would work nicely and warm the painting.
