Nestling in a wooded crook of Hampshire downland, Butser Ancient Farm is an unusual place because it is neither a historic site nor a museum, it is a real working farm. But, as you immediately notice when you visit us, our farm is very different from any other in the late 20th century and early 21st century. It is the only place in western Europe where prehistoric livestock, cereals and other plan

ts are presented, along with fields and fences, Iron Age Houses and other buildings, now extended to include a Neolithic longhouse, Roman Villa and Saxon house and workshop based on an excavation in nearby Chalton. The opening hours are extended to 7 days a week during the summer months.

At today’s Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Butser Ancient Farm, our Chair, Steve Cummins reflected on the things we choose to give our time to. Not least because several of our members chose to come together on a Sunday morning, because we care about the Farm. That’s something worth celebrating.

So, as Steve said, “Thank you. Thank you for showing up, physically or remotely, not just this morning, but throughout the year. Thank you for lending your time and your energy to something that has meaning.

We all choose how we use our time, and I’m very grateful to be spending it with all of you.”

We were pleased to be on site at Butser Ancient Farm for this year’s meeting, immersed in the site we exist to support.
