Located in one of the city's most historic buildings, Peterborough Museum has a wealth of stories to fascinate and enthral all the family. Set in a historic building, you can learn its story: from private house, to hospital and museum, and see inside the original Victorian Operating Theatre to learn about the grisly history of surgery. The collections comprise over 200,000 items of great national and international importance, and you can find out about the story of Peterborough from prehistory to the present. See which creatures swam in the seas over 150 million years ago, discover the Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon treasures of the city, learn the story of the first prisoner of war camp in the UK, right up to the changes seen over the 20th century in Peterborough.

This lacis embroidery panel is thought to have been made by Mary, Queen of Scots while imprisoned at Fotheringhay Castle.

The image of the falcon depicted here symbolises Mary’s nobility and royal authority. You can see this object in person right now in our pop-up Mary, Queen of Scots display! On display until 31 October.

👑 In support of Peterborough Cathedral 's Mary, Queen of Scots exhibition, we're showcasing a small display of fascinating objects connected to one of history’s most famous queens.

Look closely at the delicate lace - it's especially fascinating, as Mary is said to have spent time working on it. Along side this see miniature portraits of Mary and see a tassel from Mary’s bedchamber, offering a wonderfully tangible connection to the queen and her life.

The Cathedral’s Mary, Queen of Scots exhibition is open now until 15 November, so why not make a day of it and explore both venues on your visit?
