🌿 Amaranthus caudatus – Love-Lies-Bleeding 🌿

If you've visited our kitchen garden recently then, like many others, you have probably wondered what this striking plant that we are growing is.
Amaranthus caudatus, commonly known as Love-Lies-Bleeding, is certainly a plant that makes a statement!

Its long, cascading flower tassels spill downwards in shades of rich red, creating a wonderfully unusual display from summer into autumn.

It is also entirely edible as both its leaves and tiny seeds (often compared to quinoa) can be eaten.
As well as a fantastic choice for pollinators and a striking addition to a cutting garden – the unusual blooms can be used fresh or dried for arrangements.

A real head-turner and a great way to add something a little unexpected to your summer planting!

Have you grown Love-Lies-Bleeding before?

🍂 Autumn colour, berries, year-round interest and excellent for wildlife 🍂

If you’re looking for a small tree for your garden, then don’t overlook crab apples (Malus), Sorbus and Euonymus, especially as they are all fantastic for wildlife.

🍎 Crab apples – beautiful spring blossom followed by colourful fruits in shades of red, orange and yellow. A fantastic choice for wildlife and a great way to add seasonal interest.

🍁 Sorbus – commonly known as Rowan trees or Mountain ash, elegant trees with attractive foliage, pretty blossom and brilliant autumn berries. They are particularly valuable for birds, making them a wonderful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.

🌿 Euonymus phellomanus – grown for its striking winter stems featuring broad, corky "wings," brilliant lipstick-pink autumn fruits that split to reveal bright orange seeds, and reliable compact growth suited for small gardens.
🌿Whilst Euonymus europaeus 'Red Cascade' (commonly known as the spindle tree) offers stunning autumn color, heavy berry production, as well as great value for wildlife.

Discover our full range of trees and shrubs on our website or visit us at Larch Cottage Nurseries.
