Ruth Wharton works in the working and worked landscapes of the Pennines, drawing in charcoal or graphite and painting in oils on site, allowing a spontaneous and honest approach with direct observation and space for intuition to flow. The subject is often not pre-planned, but come upon while walking, biking, or driving if too distant from Ruth's home near Appleby.

In her work, lines enclose land under the open fell, quarries scar the hill, water channelled for forgotten purpose at the old mine, floods transform the familiar scene, storm blown trees bend sideways, the fields a vivid monochrome green. This is a damaged and poignant beauty: silence has overtaken the noise of industry, witness to our transitory lives. Peatlands and rivers, peewits and curlews: within its beauty, this landscape cautions for the future. Ruth hopes her art reflects our need to inhabit our landscapes with care. In her studio in Gilcrux, West Cumbria, EVAN member stained glass artist Nikki Clark uses traditional skills that haven’t changed much since Medieval times. All her work is hand-crafted, thoughtfully designed and well made. As well as commissioned pieces, she carries out repairs and restoration work as part of this heritage craft. Nikki welcomes commissions to make stained glass windows for private homes and buildings, as well as smaller bespoke panels for special occasions.

Nikki Clark Glass uses different techniques to embellish and bring interest to her work, from hand painting and leadwork to copper foiling and making her own kiln formed fused glass pieces. It’s a magical process and Nikki never gets tired of seeing her designs come to life in such colourful and expressive ways.

Teaching stained glass is a wonderful way to help keep this heritage craft alive and Nikki offers workshops and mentoring programmes that are carefully planned to help and encourage students learn and develop their skills whether they are complete beginners or have more experience.

Lynne Frost's first love will always be for the moorland landscapes of Northern England, particularly those in her native North West and Cumbria. She is an ardent walker in all weathers and aims to capture in her sketch book those special moments that all of us walkers chance upon. She usually sketches in either charcoal or watercolour, and her sketches later form the basis of studio works in mixed media. Quite often, she actually like the original sketch best, capturing the moment on the hills. Blencathra, near Threlkeld, occupies a special place in her affections, facing it as she does from her living room window.

Like all our members Lynne Frost has a dedicated page on our website exhibiting her art and giving details of how to contact her to find out more https://buff.ly/41i7gNE - our website is a great way to browse information about all of our members and their work.

Cezary Flak is a young artist based in the Eden Valley who has been interested in oil painting from a young age where in Dumfries and Galloway he was inspired by his first artistic mentors and the 'Scottish Riviera'. Since moving to the Lake District to study his style has developed into a more free flowing and abstract feel for landscapes, while following his interest in realism for portraiture.

You can find Cezary's work in the EVAN Gallery in Penrith, where many of our members exhibit their work, and he also welcomes commissions.

Nichola Connell is an EVAN member specialising in pet portraits. She escaped living in the bright lights of inner-city London over a decade ago and has never looked back. She has been an animal lover all her life, with her first business aged 14 being dog walking for her family's friends and neighbours. She has owned many cats and a dog and spent a lot of time riding as well as mucking out horses. Whilst living in London she spent 5 years as a volunteer for a Wildlife Trust https://buff.ly/4b4cOOS., caring for all sorts of British Wildlife. She is a member of the Keswick Society of Art, and also volunteers to support and help raise funds for The Penrith & District Red Squirrel Group (PDRSG). Next up in the Eden Valley Touring Network's season of events is on Saturday 22nd February at Skelton Toppin Hall with Pete Garnett followed by Tyan. Doors open at 7pm, admission £8

Pete Garnett is a masterful accordion player, with intricate tunes and harmonies influenced by European and World Music.

Tyan have ‘Exceptional voices blended together in glorious harmonies’ (Unicorn Magazine. Singing together now for 6 years, June Swift and Peter Michael Rowan bring you close harmonies, a double bass, a fiddle, a guitar and a Puerto Rican cuatro, and songs that lean towards Americana whilst nodding at English songwriters and big-screen musicals. Expect boats (of course!), small-town record stores, Chinese horoscopes, convict ship figureheads and dancing as an alternative to capitalism.

Dawn Johnstone enjoys experimenting with textiles, paints and threads, creating thread painting and textile art. She uses free motion embroidery that creates stitches with a sewing machine that resembles paint strokes.

Dawn works with many different fabrics, but Habotai silk with its smooth texture, strength, yet fine weave is her favourite. She also enjoys marbleing on fabrics and she finds applying paint a slow, relaxing, measured process that creates a beautiful soft background. In contrast to painting, free motion embroidery is a much livelier process where she moves her fabric around, painting with many coloured threads giving beautiful detail, texture and depth to her work.

Take your loved one this Saturday night on Valentine's weekend (or come on your own) to EVTN's concert at Langwathby Village Hall where you'll hear Pete Moran and Briar and Bramble. Admission £8, doors open at 7pm.

Pete Moran is a Penrith-based musician writing and playing folk-flavoured songs and a few tunes too - mainly on acoustic guitar, but the 'dark side' of electric occasionally calls! Pete has played with local groups Errant Thieves and Green Man's Apprentice and has taken part in many EVAN gigs and projects including Beneath the Beacon.

Briar and Bramble are Mike Turnbull and Kate Hewson based in Kendal. Mike is a multi-instrumentalist who has the knack for writing well crafted songs with a story to tell. With his trademark tenor guitar, Mike's influences are taken from the Lakes, across the UK and beyond. With Kate on the mandolin and Shruti box, the Briar and Bramble sound and style is original modern folk ranging from melodic ballads to more upbeat styles.

A sneak peek of ASH (Artists Shepherds Hut) - it's looking good!

It's being built near Alston and when it's ready later in the spring it will be used as an exhibition space, performance space, music stage, wildlife hide, creative meeting place and a 'artist in residence' space where our artists can work, meet, and connect with our communities across the Eden Valley. Our aim is that it will also be available for community groups, and for hire to promote the arts at festivals and shows.

EVAN are able to develop ASH thanks to a grant from the Westmorland and Furness Authority’s Thrive with Arts, Culture and Heritage Programme.

Where would you like to see it visit, and what would you like to find inside?

EVAN Artist Sarah Reid Red Raw Studios creates abstract paintings in pastel, inspired by the atmospheric light and colour of the Cumbrian coastline, the Lake District and the Eden Valley. Sarah is fascinated by the ever changing light upon the landscape and our place within it and aims to capture an emotional response to the scenery. She invites the viewer to explore the scene - drawn in by unexpected hints of light and colour, strong lines and bold stripes.

You'll often find Sarah in the EVAN Gallery where she's one of the artists who have a working studio there, so if you'd like to find out more or talk to her then the gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10-4 at 4 Corney Place in Penrith.
