34: Critical Raw Materials opens 17 June.

If you're looking for free things to do out in Oxford, look no further than our free exhibition, 34.

Interactive digital installations allow visitors to dismantle everyday objects virtually, revealing the dozens of elements inside, and to watch the volcanic processes that put mineral-rich rocks and liquids within our grasp.

A tactile, hands-on section enables visitors to physically trace iron’s journey from ore through smelting and refinement to alloyed products, with the opportunity to handle raw minerals, ingots, pellets and finished objects.

Our next exhibition 34: Critical Raw Materials opens 17 June.

We need more copper each year to wire our technology and update our electrical grids. Our demand for copper is increasing much faster than it can be mined.

By bringing together geological specimens and industrial products, historic objects, contemporary technologies and cutting-edge scientific research, 34 asks how we can meet rising demand for critical raw materials without further endangering the ecosystems and communities that call Earth home.

Today is International Museum Day! It is a wonderful day to shine a light on what this Museum can do in terms inspiring people of all ages with the wonders of science and the natural world.

Our doors first opened in 1860, and we have been home to a growing collection of objects as well world-leading scientific research, and we have always been free.

If you want to support us to continue our mission for the next 166 years, please consider donating to us online, or when you next visit us in person. Your donations help us to keep the Museum running, the researchers working, and the events free.

We ran an open call to select an artist to commission for our next exhibition, 34: The Critical Raw Materials Shaping Our Future. While we could only choose one artist, there were five amazing artists who are working at the intersection of art and science who we still wanted to highlight. In honour of Oxfordshire Art Weeks, we will be featuring each artist’s work over this week.

Our next artist is Liu Xuan
