Lisa Miller Fine Art

Lisa Miller Fine Art Original paintings and prints https://www.thepaintedhorse.co.uk I have been painting equestrian subjects, mostly with a horse-racing theme, for over 30 years.

A full member of the Society of Equestrian Artists, and winner of the prestigious 'Best in Show' in 2014. I initially trained as a wildlife artist/illustrator in the 1980's and have always been a keen birdwatcher. Although I have painted a handful of wildlife subjects over the years I have plans to pursue this subject in earnest, along with new landscapes and portraits. I will, however, still be available for equestrian commissions.

Another golden oldie today from 2002 - a painting of one of my favourite racehorses, Mtoto, who I went to see whilst he was at stud (we lived near Newbury at the time). I had lots of photographs but sadly they disappeared during various moves. I did a couple of paintings, this being one of them.

This is a fairly recent painting (2022) of a point-to-point horse being led back to the stables after pulling up. I really enjoyed painting this - I was especially pleased with the sheen on the coat.

This oil painting, which I titled 'Concentration' I feel was one of my most successful horse and jockey combos. I was really pleased with the shimmer and colour of the silks and the light on the jockey, combined with the broad brush approach to both his portrait and the horse. This is not often the case, so this was a rare painting!

A real favourite of mine today - a painting of an arab racehorse (Al Mamoon) and his lass. I took some liberties with tack etc to keep the colour scheme harmonious.
This was bought by a lady from the NE who fell in love with it.
We met for the exchange in a service station on our way to the Scottish Game Fair - ah the glamorous life of an artist!

Today's offering is a mini portrait of the wonderful The Tin Man. This tough sprinter won three Group 1 races, including the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot. He's currently retired and living a good life at the National Stud in Newmarket.

Not a horse today but a jockey!
This was a commission after the silk's owners saw another painting of mine of jockeys in the paddock at Ffos Las (my local track).
I may have mentioned once or twice how much I love painting jockey silks and this was a real joy. (click to see the full image).

This is an oil painting depicting the 2yo Calypso King from photographs taken whilst at Newbury racecourse back in 2005. I don't think he was any great shakes as a racehorse but he was certainly a pretty one. I liked this pose. He was dancing a lot in the paddock, so I think he was well named!

Todays painting from the archive is another commission - of the mare Milly's Lass and her Foxhound c**t Fox's Den (though the staff at Kingwood Stud called him Dennis the Menace!).

They were perfect models and we had a great day out at Kingwood. 😊

Another small stud portrait in oils today. This painting of the stallion Sadler's Wells was also a commission and was painted in 2004. The son of Northern Dancer was a very good racehorse and even better sire. His Derby winning son Galileo has become a major influence on the breed in the 21st Century.

'Final Adjustments'
another arab racehorse painting from the archive. As you can probably tell from this one, I loved painting the blue and white Hamdan Al Maktoum silks as much as the horse! This oil painting is of Inshaad with Mr P Collington up.

Probably my favourite 'Stud Portrait' and another commission from years ago. As with Nijinsky I had to mainly rely on black and white photographs. I've done a couple of 'Brigadier' commissions but I think this was the best one. 😊🐎

Today's offering is a commission from 2004 of the Champion racehorse and last British Triple Crown winner Nijinsky. I had to work with mostly black and white photographs and the odd colour one of him racing but the client was very happy with the result.

I'm taking a bit of a sabbatical at the moment as I'm still undecided as to where my art is going. I'm busy with the allotment, and the garden, and we've just started on a garden pond so there's plenty to do. I'm also working on fine-tuning our business - Youtube, Pinterest and the website, which has its own rewards!
In the meantime I plan to share some of the work I've done over the past thirty-odd years. This is a really old piece (2005), a rare small landscape of Seven Barrows. 😊
