We're hard at work changing over Gallery 2 for our new exhibition In Which Language Do We Dream? Painting the walls is a mammoth task and we get through A LOT of paint.

We can't wait to welcome everyone to the FREE opening on Saturday 10 February at 2pm. There'll be light refreshments and photographer Rich Wiles will be in conversation with Anne McNeill, curator of the Impressions Gallery. He'll be sharing the stories behind the images and how he worked on this co-curated project with the al-Hindawi family.

🎊GO Explorers, Sat 3rd Feb, 10.30 - 12 🎊

Have you heard the good news?! GO Explorers is back on this weekend and we cannot wait! It feels like an age since our toddlers were busy exploring the gallery together with our early year team and we have missed them!

If you're wondering what it's all about we've put an FAQ on our page with some helpful hints and tips. No access to Facebook? Don't worry just drop a comment below!

Now who's ready to play?!?

We'll have some extra special books included in our cosy area lovingly picked from our building neighbours

We're back this weekend for our first GO Explorers of the year!

We've had a few questions about the session so thought we would do a little Q&A post for anyone interested! If you have any more questions please feel free to comment below or pop us a DM!

✨What is GO Explorers?

GO Explorers is our once a month creative toddler sessions for confident walkers to 4 year olds. We run, skip, play and most importantly have fun through messy play. We follow a montessori and heuristic play approach, which means that we create areas and environments for the children to explore and play in however they want to.

🐝 What do we do in a session?

GO Explorers is free play, so we will create areas to help them explore the world around them. Each session is different but in the past we've made a city out of cardboard, have got REALLY messy with plenty of non-toxic paints, made potions with herbs and spices, had a water play session - the list is endless! We will always have a soft, non-messy area if you need a break.

🐛 My little one is under 2, is that a problem?

Not at all! We welcome all ages, but as some of our elder attendee's can be very quick on their feet and love to run around we suggest this is better for confident walkers. If you have a younger baby we would suggest GO Baby! which is our mid-week twice a month session instead.

🐞Where does it happen?

In our education space, which is the big room on the ground floor. As soon as you walk into the building, turn right and go through the big green double doors. You'll probably hear us before you see us!

🪴 I'm nervous about coming on my own..

Don't worry, we get this a lot. We have lots of families of all shapes and sizes who come on their own, as soon as you walk through the doors your worries will melt away. We also have very friendly staff who manage our early years sessions who are at each workshop to help. They are there to help you in any way you might need from someone walking in with you to helping you be playful with your little one.

🌷How much does it cost?

GO Explorers is £4 per session per toddler, you don't need to pre-book, just turn up on the day and pay in person. If you have a younger sibling (in a pram/non walking) they are free to join. And if you're a parent or carer of twins or multiples you only pay for one toddler.

🍂When is the next one?
This weekend! Saturday 3rd February, 10.30am - 12pm,
(if you're a parent/carer of twins and multiples only pay for one little one)

We're excited to be installing a new exhibition In Which Language Do We Dream? which opens at Gallery Oldham on 10 February 2024. Come along to the opening at 2pm and listen as photographer Rich Wiles explores the stories behind the images.

Based around the experiences of the al-Hindawi family, the exhibition takes a moving look at their resettlement in the UK after the family fled Syria. Tracing their journey to the UK, the exhibition explores what it was like to make new friends, learn a new language, and set up a new home.

Did you know the Manchester area is one of the best places to find fossil plants, such as these three beautiful ferns from the Gallery Oldham collection?

These prehistoric forests were home to many giant insects and amphibians - our exhibition on these monsters finishes next week, so if you haven't already been then now is your last chance!

12/01/2024

2024 is the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Municipal Borough of Oldham, but people have lived here for centuries.

Here's the oldest document in the Oldham Local Studies and Archives collection. It's called "The Originall Booke of Crompton Poore" and we think it was compiled in 1597, not long after Elizabeth I established the first poor law system in England and Wales.

We don't get it out very often because of its age. It has clearly been well used and, at some point in its life, has been repaired using linen paper and archival tissue to strengthen what remains and prevent it deteriorating any further.

The document is written in secretary hand and lists the men, women and children in Crompton who were in need of support from the township. The poor law differentiated between people who were able to work, people who were too old or sick to work, and people who were vagrants. Some would receive poor relief in the workhouse, while others would be found work or were sent back to the place they came from for the Overseers of the Poor there to deal with.

There's a phrase used in the document, "tenante to all the Lordes in the town peinge [paying] no rente", which means they were living on the common land in the township rather than renting a plot of land from a local landowner.

There's a transcript in Elsie Ballard's Chronicle of Crompton that is easier to read, and that's what we bring out of storage for people to look at. The Chronicle of Crompton is a fascinating look at the history of one of the townships that now make up Oldham Metropolitan Borough.

Oldham Local Studies and Archives is closed at the moment while we move the collections, but we're taking a copy of Chronicle of Crompton to Oldham Library when we open our temporary local studies service in March. Why not drop in to find out more in a couple of months?
