To celebrate Back to School, we’re shining a light on Gallery Oldham’s school workshops.

First up is our new Key Stage Two workshop: A Portal to Oldham’s Industrial Past. In this immersive and interactive workshop, pupils meet famous Oldham photographer Squire Knott (pictured) in 1876 through a time portal and learn about Oldham’s role in the Industrial Revolution. Pupils get to dress up as mill workers and find out what job they would have had spinning cotton as well as taking part in activities to learn where cotton and coal comes from. They find out about the working conditions of slaves and mill workers followed by a creative writing exercise to empathise with slaves, mill workers and mill owners. There is also a tour of the Oldham Stories exhibition highlighting objects related to cotton and Oldham’s industrial past.

This two-hour workshop is led by an experienced educator and costs £115 for up to 35 pupils. Workshops take place on Mondays and Tuesdays.

For more information, email [email protected] or call 0161 770 4643.
