A fascinating bit of wartime engineering on our recent trip to the Isle of Wight. Operation PLUTO: Pipeline Under The Ocean.

Hidden within the old fort at Sandown, now part of the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary site, is one of the original pumping installations associated with PLUTO. The scheme was developed to supply Allied forces in France with fuel following the D-Day landings, without having to rely entirely on vulnerable tankers and captured fuel facilities.

As the Allied armies advanced across Europe, their demand for petrol was enormous. PLUTO involved laying pipelines beneath the English Channel so fuel could be pumped directly from Britain to the Continent. It was an extraordinary engineering undertaking and formed part of the vast logistical effort required to keep the liberation of Europe moving.

The surviving pump at Sandown was manufactured by Crompton Parkinson and has since been restored and returned to its original wartime setting. Seeing a substantial piece of the actual machinery in situ really brings home the scale of the operation. This wasn’t simply an experimental idea on a drawing board, but a huge industrial project involving pumps, pipelines, storage facilities and pumping stations on both sides of the Channel.

It is very easy when studying D-Day to concentrate on the landing craft, tanks, aircraft and fighting men. Sites like this are a reminder that behind them stood an enormous logistical network. Without a continuous supply of fuel, the Allied advance could quite literally have ground to a halt.

Another fantastic surviving piece of Second World War history and definitely one of the highlights of our visit to the Isle of Wight.
