Did you know that the 7th Battalion (The Robin Hoods) were awarded a Belgium Crox de Guerre for its services in the defence of Brussells in February 1945? A rare award for a unit. They were in close suppport to the Allied Advance to the Rhine.

Translating as "Cross of War", the Croix de guerre or Oorlogskruis is a military decoration of the Kingdom of Belgium established by royal decree on 25 October 1915. It was mainly awarded for bravery or other military virtue on the battlefield.

The National Army Museum looks back at the events of the end of the Second World War

Our 1945 Series Continues...

On this night in 1945, the 21st Army Group launched Operation Plunder and successfully crossed the Rhine River. This enormous amphibious operation involved more than 1.25 million soldiers, supported by a massive artillery barrage of 5,000 guns, a vast smokescreen, and continuous aerial bombardment.

German resistance was limited, and the operation proved to be a complete success. As the Allied forces pressed deeper into the heart of Germany, the outcome was becoming increasingly clear—victory was now only a matter of time.

during the Peninsular Campaign of 1808 – 14, the 45th Nottinghamshire Regiment took part in the successful attack on the French positions at Orthes. The 45th was deployed into line, and occupied nearly the whole of the front of the right wing of the allied army.

It was reported that at no time, perhaps, during the whole war had the special characteristics of the 45th – steadiness and stubbornness – been more splendidly displayed than they were on this occasion. The allies lost heavily, the “Fighting Third” including Lieutenant Metcalfe and Lieutenant Macpherson who was so severely wounded that he never again rejoined.

Colonel Houghton raises a new regiment, and is known as Houghton’s Regiment Under the command of Colonel Warburton, numerical titles were introduced into the British Army. The Regiment became the 45th…

The 95th Derbyshire Regiment during the Crimean War of 1854 – 56 took part in the arduous and successful operations which led to the reduction of the fortress of Sebastopol. They resolved that the siege would be undertaken by besieging the inlet of Balaklava, several miles south of Sebastopol, as an advance base instead of making a direct attack.

Consequently, with their continuous and intensive bombardment on the city they were successful and the Regiment gained the nickname of “The Nails” in this siege as they were known to “To stick wherever you post them – like nails”.
