We are so excited for the launch of our latest exhibition here at East Gallery, Richard Sawdon Smith : A Life Lived Through Photography, an artist in residence / archive exploration. 8 August - 9 September.
Disrupting the traditional ‘white cube’ space, it seeks to engage with Sawdon’s own archive of photographic and film work spanning more than three decades.
Richard Sawdon Smith’s art practice takes the form of staged self-portraiture and the body. His photography can best be described as issue-based work – exploring concerns of identity, sexuality, gender, queerness, and masculinity as well as the construction of subjectivity. Over the last 30 years this has primarily been in reference to representation of illness/health.

East Gallery is delighted to offer two opportunities to join Norwich University of the Arts as an East Gallery Fellow – Creative Practice for ten months from November 2023 to September 2024, providing a significant opportunity for creative exchange and experimentation embedded in the pioneering research culture of Norwich University of the Arts.

The Fellows will benefit from pastoral and curatorial support, a generous grant, production expenses, and valuable access to the University’s state of the art facilities including fully equipped workshops, library, technical resources, and academic expertise. The Fellowships are non-prescriptive and focus on supporting creative practitioners to research and develop an innovative practice-based project that will result in a high-quality exhibition at East Gallery.

Deadline for applications: 1 September 2023, 12noon (UK time)

work consists of creatures that often blur the divide between human and beast, that are brought to life as poseable soft sculptures.

Rule Britannia: Legacies of Exchange. The Singh Twins, 2018.
As part of the triptych originally commissioned by Royal Collection Trust, you can also explore the vast detail of the artwork via an iPad stationed in the gallery.

Throughout the triptych, objects that were gifted to Albert Edward Prince of Wales symbolise India and the British Empire's history of maritime transportation, facilitating the movement of goods and the heritage of skilled craftsmanship in India.
On display here at East Gallery NUA, entry is included with admission for the first part of the exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery (free for Norwich University of the Arts and UEA students).
