In 1969, artist James Lee Byars asked ‘100 of the world’s most brilliant minds’ the question: What question is pertinent to the evolution of your own knowledge?

Outpost Question Centre riffs on Byars’ obsession with questions, using them as a curatorial framework to explore intergenerational influence, grassroots artist networks, and artistic know-how circulating through artist-led communities. 

Across three stages, participants will contribute questions to a two-day workshop. Invited interlocutors will respond to these questions and prompts through making and collaboration. The project culminates in an exhibition at Outpost, bringing together the questions and responses through posters, video, audio and artworks.

Coming up at OUTPOST: Tympanums by Finbar Jon Prior

Tympanums investigates the word’s various meanings; as an architectural decorative portal within Gothic and Romanesque buildings, as the frog’s external auditory membrane, and as a drum to play and create rhythms, and explores how these forms could coalesce.

For the duration of this exhibition, Outpost Gallery will take on a primordial, amphibious form as tympanic membranes sound out in otoacoustic emissions.

Join us for our first ever OUTPOST fundraising dinner!

On Sunday 4th October chef and artist Henry Anderson Brown will be serving a three course menu at OUTPOST gallery, starting at 18:30.

As this is a fundraiser, the price for the dinner will be on a sliding scale:

* Reservation is £15 (paid on booking, non refundable)
* Three course dinner, pay what you can, starting at £25 (paid on the night)

There will be drinks, one hell of a meal, a sound piece involving frog mating calls, and the cutest people in Norwich.

OUTPOST is an artist-led space run entirely by volunteers, raising funds for every show we do. The proceeds from this dinner will go to funding our programming. Come join us to eat well and make merry for the greater good: good art!!!

Sounding the Line: Reading Group

To accompany Anastasia Eggers’ exhibition Sounding the Line, local writer Lotte L.S. will lead two sessions exploring the strange and varied worlds gathered around herring and the sea: the fishing crews of East Anglia recorded by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger for a 1960s radio ballad; the female fishworker strikes in Great Yarmouth in the 1930s; poetry by Daphne Marlatt and Charles Olson; and Mark Jenkin’s uncanny films of Cornwall, where the disintegration of labour and maritime life in the region leaves it pinned between nostalgia and an uncertain future.

The two sessions will consist of reading, listening, watching, talking and writing.

Thursdays 17th & 24th September, 6.30PM - 8.30PM.
