OUTPOST is excited to host Hettie Judah ( ) for her ‘Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood’ book tour, alongside non-profit radical bookshop Caracol Books ( )

Hettie Judah is a writer and art critic who regularly contributes to publications such as the Guardian, Apollo, Frieze and the Times Literary Supplement. ‘Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood’ explores maternity through the work of artists from prehistory to current day - addressing the ‘mother-shaped hole in art history’. She has lectured widely on art and motherhood, and in 2022 co-founded the Art Working Parents Alliance. Recent books include Lapidarium: The Secret Lives of Stones (2022) and How Not To Exclude Artist Mothers (and other parents) (2022).

This event will be supported by Caracol Books, who will be providing a pop-up stall of other books to browse and purchase. Caracol is a volunteer-run and not-for-profit radical bookshop and meeting space based in Norwich, UK.

We hope you join us next Friday for this insightful event at

OUTPOST is pleased to have brought you our 2024 OUTPOST Member’s Show, selected by Jade Marie Anderson.

Our annual Member’s Show is our yearly opportunity to present the works of multiple artists and showcase works from our Members and the array of different practices, perspectives, concepts and approaches they have to offer.

This year’s exhibitors and their pieces have been chosen by Jade Marie Anderson, including

Isobel Brigham
Adam Burton
Jack Lewdjaw
Noel Hensey
Rachael Barns
Seiko Hayase
Sophie Purchase
Gary Diggines

The work on show unites the artists in how a sense of being can be found in each of their submissions. Within her selections, Jade Marie Anderson has discovered and interpreted both unique and unifying intentions in the pieces she has chosen.

These unifying ideas have been drawn out to create an exhibition led by some overarching themes. That of a sense of being; an inner critic, feeling alive, walking the
earth, a need for connection, liberation, and overall a perception of things that may or may not define us.

OUTPOST is run by a steering committee of volunteers who each have a 2 year tenure, meaning power is constantly shifting. Last month we said goodbye to Maddie and Emily who served as Chair and Membership Coordinator respectively. We asked them both about their time at OUTPOST and to share some of their favourite memories - you’ll both be missed dearly! 💕

How has OUTPOST impacted you?

Maddie: It is such an incredible learning opportunity. As a facilitator, it’s been so valuable to have a space to try out alternative art facilition strategies with the committee, and be able to say - it’s totally mental you’re giving up your time to be here. Why are you doing that and let’s follow that drive because that excitement and passion is the only reason outpost has existed for 20 years, with no paid committee.

Emily: OUTPOST has provided an opportunity and a space to feel a real sense of community, expanding beyond the (amazing!) people I immediately worked with, stretching years into history and the future! It’s given me a space to learn, sometimes through trial and error and importantly somewhere to know that my voice is heard and appreciated.

What are the highlights of your time on the committee?

Maddie: It’s always the people. Thinking about stuffing a 70ft parachute into Emily Cannell’s car boot. All the people who have been at the other end of the s**t sofas we’ve carried down Magdalen street the night before an opening. The alumni who come and say I can’t belive it’s still going, like the gallery is someone’s old cat that refuses to die.

Emily: As well as all the incredible artists I got to work with to help organise so many beautiful shows- some of my highlights are from my time spent with the committee. Such as our regular pre-meeting activities. These were a chance to reflect on ourselves, our own creativity, how we felt about outpost and what we saw in its future.
