Royal Visit to RAF C**tishall 1943
On the 28th January 1943, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth carried out a visit to C**tishall, During the visit the King presented the Squadron badge to OC 278 Sqn, Flt Lt Phillip Smith. This was the first time that a reigning monarch had presented a signed squadron crest to a unit directly. 278 Sqn was an Air Sea Rescue Sqn with a responsibility for rescuing downed airmen from the sea around the East coast, which operated Lysanders, Ansons and Walrus aircraft.

More thanks to Jim Simpson for these photos, of an interesting selection of visiting aircraft during his 79-82 tour.

The beginning of the Lightning era, C**tishall's Christmas present 1959 with the first jet arriving on the 23rd December, followed by 2 more by the end of the year. They formed part of the Air Fighting Development Squadron, which was responsible for the introduction and tactics as the Lightning came into service. Unfortunately the first aircraft XG334, was also the first be lost, crashing into the sea off Wells, after the undercarriage jammed, the pilot ejected having pointed it out to sea on the 5/3/60. As far as I can make out, the aircraft has never been recovered.

Another successful year of taking part in the annual Heritage Open Days. Four days carrying out three pre booked tours a day with 20 people on each tour plus a few extras. Showing people how well kept the site is and passing on our collective knowledge of the history and heritage of the former RAF C**tishall and plans for the future. Many thanks to all who visited and for the volunteers for giving up their time to make it so successful.
