North Tyneside Steam Railway

North Tyneside Steam Railway Enthusiasts page for the North Tyneside Steam Railway. The Association altered its name to reflect this change of venue and purpose.

The North Tyneside Steam Railway Association support the running of the ‘Stephenson Steam Railway’ museum, a part of North East Museums. The Association that operates the railway was formed in 1977 as The Monkwearmouth Station Museum Association for the purpose of assisting the then named Tyne & Wear Joint Museums Service to restore railway related items at the former Goods Shed at Monkwearmouth,

Sunderland. The first items to receive members' attention were Consett Iron Company's diesel locomotive No 10 and steam locomotive A No. 5. A deteriorating roof on the Goods Shed necessitated the transfer of the items in 1981 to the former Metro Test Track & Centre at Middle Engine Lane, West Chirton, in the district of North Tyneside which was owned by the Local Authority. The local authority developed a steam hauled passenger service on the 2-mile track between Middle Engine Lane and Percy Main Village. The exhibit hall became known as The Stephenson Railway Museum. We have a purpose built train shed consisting of a locomotive stabling space, a locomotive workshop and a carriage and wagon workshop. Additional exhibits have been acquired by Tyne & Wear Museums & Archives (who now operate the site); North Tyneside Council, and ourselves. As well as carrying out restoration and maintenance work on these, our volunteers operate the railway. This includes jobs such as Driver, Fireman, Second man, Guard, and Operations Controller. All day Wednesday & Saturday are the periods when most volunteers meet to carry out restoration and maintenance work. Train services usually start at Easter and run on most Sundays. Junior members are allowed to join in providing they are accompanied by an adult.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHIC EVENING - FRIDAY 5th JUNE

Next Friday we host our annual Photographic Evening featuring a variety of locomotives and rolling stock (including visiting locomotive Lion!) and volunteers in period clothing. This is an outdoor event and will involve walking on ballast and uneven surfaces. All participants must wear sturdy shoes and other suitable outdoor clothing. Photographers of all experience welcome.

The Waggonway Tea Room will be open for refreshments. 🫖

Event runs 6pm – 10pm.

It’s less than two weeks until our ‘Lion’ Running Weekend. Built in 1914 for the Royal Woolwich Arsenal, Peckett No.1351 ‘Lion’ was sold to the Wallsend Slipway & Engineering Co. in 1950 where she worked by the river Tyne until entering preservation in 1974. Visit us on 5th-7th June as we celebrate Lion’s first visit back to North Tyneside in 52 years!

🎟️ Book your tickets here! https://rb.gy/kbvde9

🚂 There’ll be a busy timetable of passenger and demonstration freight trains throughout the weekend, featuring the debut of the recently restored ‘ACME’ Kerosene tank wagon.

📸 Get up close and personal with ‘Lion’ for a variety of scenes and run-pasts during our Photographic Evening on Friday 5th.

🚗 On Saturday and Sunday we’ll be joined by an impressive display of 30+ classic cars provided by NECPWA.

🗣️ In the museum, there’ll be local history displays, tours of the workshops and our OO gauge layout ‘Middle Engine Lane’ will be running. We’ll also be joined by Dave Dunn in the John Storey Room for a fascinating slideshow of railway photographs (timings TBA).

🌭 A ‘Sausage Supper Special’ will be available on the 5pm and 6pm departures on Saturday 6th. Stay tuned for further details.

STEAM GALA - LOCOMOTIVE UPDATE

Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of our control, we are having to downscale the Steam Gala planned for the weekend of 5th-7th June.

We are looking forward to welcoming unique Peckett No. 1351 ‘Lion’ back to North Tyneside for the first time in over 50 years in just under three weeks time. However, despite the best efforts of its owner, the second visiting locomotive we had organised to accompany ‘Lion’ is no longer available for the event. Furthermore, we are experiencing delays in ongoing repair work to our home-based steam locomotives and unfortunately this means we are unable to provide the line-up of locomotives that would stand up to our previous Steam Gala events.

Therefore, the Steam Gala planned for 5th-7th June is to be rebranded as our ‘Lion’ Running Weekend. Lion will be hauling a variety of passenger and freight trains across all three days of the event, also having a starring role in our Photographic Evening on Friday 5th. This will be complemented by a display of 30+ classic cars from NECPWA on Saturday and Sunday, talks in the John Storey Room, displays inside the museum and a Sausage Supper Train on the Saturday evening.

We apologise for the disappointment this will cause and hope you will still join us for this very rare opportunity to see Lion back in the North East for one weekend only. We will be reducing the ticket prices to reflect the changes to this event and current ticket holders will be contacted shortly.
