This small building perched high above the sea at Towan Head is of uncertain age. Some estimates put its origins as early as the 14th century however the current building is probably mid 19th century. It may have originally been used as a hermitage. Named after the Huer, an important figure in the pilchard fishing industry that once thrived in Newquay. The Huer would watch out from his high vantag

e point for the shoals of fish to arrive in the bay and then call out to the town by shouting 'Heva, Heva'. The seine boats with their long nets would be launched at once but then had to rely upon the Huer for directions. Holding 'Furze bushes' in his hands the Huer would direct the boats so they could first locate and then surround the fish. At first just an oval shape building, a forecourt with five foot walls was later added to its seaward side. The original door facing more towards the habour was blocked up and a new doorway made opening on to the forecourt. Owned by the Lord of the Manor Col. Treffry it was leased to the Council in 1906 for 983 years at the cost of one shilling per year. When the Council took pocession they converted it into a public shelter by widening the doorway and considerabley reducing the height of the forecourt walls. Today the now Grade II listed building has iron gates locked across the doorway and can no longer be use for shelter

A huge thank you to Newquay Lions for helping to mark a very special milestone!

To celebrate 25 years of RNLI Lifeguards keeping people safe on our beaches, the Huer's Hut, Newquay will be illuminated in RNLI Lifeguard red and yellow from 7:30pm on Friday 31st July.

We’re incredibly grateful to Newquay Lions for organising this wonderful tribute and for recognising the dedication and commitment of generations of RNLI Lifeguards who have helped save lives along our coastline over the past 25 years.

If you’re in Newquay on Friday evening, take a moment to look up at the Huers Hut and join us in celebrating this milestone.

Busy couple of hours this morning tidying up the area in and around the Hut in readiness for the South West In Bloom judging tomorrow. A huge THANK YOU goes out to the volunteers from Newquay Veterans CIC, Towan Blystra Armed Forces & Veterans breakfast club & Kamp Menalhyl for their help and loan of equipment. 👏👏

Loved having them at the Hut to give a bit of a history lesson after they enjoyed their chips. 🙂

It was a privilege to serve these adorable little cubs while out on their fish & chip hike in the Newquay sunshine yesterday while on route to the Huer's Hut, Newquay.
Just look at all those precious little smiles! 🥰

A little local history for your Sunday afternoon.

Perched above Newquay Bay on Towan Head, Huer’s Hut has been a lookout point since at least the 14th century. The building we see today dates back to the mid 19th century, but for hundreds of years Huers stood watch here, scanning the sea for shimmering shoals of pilchards. When fish were spotted, their call sent fishermen rushing to launch their boats, guided from the headland above.
