The real cost over run for restoration of the Tyne Bridge, the installation of skateboard park for the chicks to keep them from bothering the workers demanding they share the sausage rolls 😏

A few years after my last post and things have changed somewhat along Tynemouth Long Sands.
The railway and the need to escape the daily grind and dirt of the city, brought the crowds to coastal spots.
A moment before, much later, foreign travel fell in the reach of many people.
A lovely original photograph that tells a much bigger story.

Well after the masses have returned to their lives, a sense of peace and culture returned to beaches in Tynemouth today.
Taking the sea air, dipping the body into the North Sea all for physical and mental health was recommended for those who could afford it, while the locals foraged for food or offered their services.
Taken by PM Laws from Newcastle, who proudly proclaimed his studio was patronised by the Queen and the Emperor of the French.
Victorian photographers rarely undersold themselves in their marketing.

A lovely early Mathew Aunty CDV capturing not only the barracks, the ruins of castle and priory, but of the ships coming and going from the River Tyne estuary.
From watching for people and herds before crossing by the lake, to watching the land disappear, the tsunami, to changing manners of prayer, from wood to stone, from church and castle to barracks
Many stories, many lives that only the land still recalls.

After the disgusting behaviour and self important egos displayed last weekend across the nations beaches including Cullercoats, a historic reminder of when people understood the role of the lifeboat to the community and the people.
This stereoscopic photograph from Cira 1910 of the launch of a new boat shows how people respected the sea and those who went out on it.

This place of noise and rhythm,
of shouts and grim determination.
From fire and earth she was born,
To ride the waters for freedom hoped.

Another from the collection of magic lantern slides from the 1940's along the River Tyne.

From Whitby to Newcastle to London and back, this wonderful carbon print by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe is a triumph of photographer and printer.
Expensive to print and an attempt by the photographer to sell more art prints, which failed somewhat.
A familiar face and voice in the huddled yards, alleys and quayside, this moment shows the trust both sitter and photographer had in each other.
Despite her years, she had skills to earn her place at the dining table.
A chore repeated across the town, city and village where common sense and poverty combined to repair a garment rather than sell it to the ragman.

Bank holiday vibes alfresco dinner.
Another from a small collection of images from Catherine W**d Barnes Ward and her husband Henry Snowdon Ward capturing the late 1890's social world in Victorian Britain.
Catherine was from the USA, but became a life long promoter of female inclusion within photography.
Class, fashion and social history all in one photograph.

When you get invited to all the right parties, you have to dress the part.
Part of the US female powerhouse early Victorian photographer Catherine W**d Barnes album.

A lovely photo by the eye and hand of of Whitby fame.
Full of detail and insight into the working life of fishermen.
It's also signed on the verso as well as all the annotations on the front.
Just one of many gems from last weekend.
