A sketching trip and day out with my ever keen grandson Harry on Holy Island.

It included a first time visit to Emmanuel Head, one of the earliest daymarks built in Britain.

A landmark used by ships for daytime navigation to avoid dangerous rocks and find the safe channel into the harbour.

Another page from my handmade sketchbook that contains a watercolour that represents each year I’ve known Susan.

The year is 1992 and the scene is Grey Street taken from Emerson Chambers.

The following year I painted a similar version that was published as a limited edition print.

A signed lithographic print of a Morgan Sports car painted by my father Ken Reed.

I remember my dad painting this in gouache in 1975 whilst he was waiting for his own Morgan to be built.

I have happy memories of going on family holidays, the five of us crammed in with suitcases, golf clubs, fishing rods and goodness knows what else. We even had a frying pan tucked behind the back seats.

Sketchbook watercolours painted on location in and around Burnham Overy Staithe in Norfolk in 2009.

Whilst the family were fast asleep I would be up before sunrise, capturing the early morning light in my sketchbook and on blocks of watercolour paper.

Sometimes I’d have two paintings on the go at the same time, one in my sketchbook and one on a watercolour block. Whilst one wash was drying I could be working on the other painting.

Earlier this year I went into my grandson Harry’s school to teach his class how to paint Bamburgh Castle in watercolour.

Apparently it was his special memory of Year 2.

Since my first visit to Venice in June 1991 I’ve painted dozens of watercolours on location, some on watercolour blocks but mostly in these leather bound sketchbooks.

This scene in this bespoke sketchbook is a studio painting of the Grand Canal viewed from Ponte dell’Accademia.

The story of how I had a book maker in Venice make me a leather bound sketchbook containing Amalfi watercolour paper in 2007.

By Christmas that year I’d filled it with 18 watercolours that represented each year Susan and I had known each other. I now need to annotate it with appropriate text and start a new one from 2008 to present day!

Fortunately I now know how to make my own handmade sketchbooks, I don’t have to travel to Venice……..not that I’d mind.
