As we enter 2021, our oldest resident – the so-called ‘Unknown Knight’ – is about to finally receive the attention he deserves…

The medieval effigy, thought to date from the early 14th century, has been removed by Skillington Workshop from the niche that he’s been hidden in for the last 100 or so years, as revealed in our latest blog post: newcastlecathedral.org.uk/looking-back-at-our-year-of-transformation

Watch this space in the coming weeks for updates, as he’s moved to his new/former resting place!

Greetings all!
We hope that everybody is staying safe and well during this torrid and uncertain time. Today would have been the last day of our first event of the year.
Unfortunately, that couldn't happen. BUT, keep your eyes peeled on this page as we have been working on some things to get you your medieval fix online!
See you all soon!!!

"As our anxiety over the actions of other humans continues to be defined by words like 'monster' and 'monstrous,' which suggest something horrific and supernormal, Medieval Monsters offers a historical view of our tendency to morph those who are different into beasts."

Record ID: SOM-783B31 - MEDIEVAL coin

Throughout the medieval period, Newcastle upon Tyne had its own mint. It is unclear where this was but it is likely to have been within the Castle. Coins from the Newcastle mint have 'VILL/NOVI/CAS/TRI' on the Reverse side, meaning Novum Castellum, the Latin name for Newcastle. One such coin in the Portable Antiquities Scheme database dates to c.1299-1301 AD during the reign of Edward I (SOM-783B31). [https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/856670]

A Medieval silver penny of Edward I (AD 1272-1307), dating to c. AD 1299-1301. Class 9b, minted in Newcastle. North (1991: 30) No. 1037/1.

Whilst wandering around Newcastle look out for streets indicating what was there during the medieval period. Places such as Newgate Street and Westgate Road indicate the old gates on the Newcastle town wall. Pilgrim Street, or Vicus Peregrinorum,is believed to have been used from the 13th century to accommodate pilgrims travelling to Jesmond.
