When does a pot become a canvas? 🏺🎨

'The Potter’s Canvas: Ceramics and Painting in the 20th Century' brings together over 70 works by famed ceramicists and painters for the first time, including works by Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, James Tower, Alison Britton, Patrick Heron and Victor Pasmore.

Explore how drawing, painting and mark-making have been used to transform the surface of clay.

This summer exhibition brings together the practices of first and second-year MFA, MA Fine Art and PHD students.

Free entry. On display until Saturday 29 August 2026. All welcome. Open Monday–Saturday, 10am–5pm.

You probably know the Hatton is home to Kurt Schwitters’ Merz Barn Wall, but did you know he built his masterpiece using decorator's plaster and paint over found objects?

Even while we're in changeover, you can still pop in and check it out. Plus, the exhibition room is lovely and cool, making it the perfect spot to escape the heat and soak in some culture. ❄
