Ever fancied some frumety, sops, or gingerbrede? Now’s your chance to try some of the flavours and recipes popular in medieval England, as our cooks whip up some of the cutting-edge cuisines of the 14th century. Between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of September, the landlady of the Blackbird tavern will be in residence at the Black Gate of Newcastle Castle, along with her loyal cook Heron Pitt. You can take your chance to try some of the recipes that were served to King Richard II, and they will demonstrate to you proper table manners, so that you won’t embarrass yourselves in a respectable medieval household.
After the free event, we suggest buying a ticket and explore the rest of the Castle and the Black Gate.

Our Story

Standing on the site of the original 'New Castle' which gave the city its name, the Castle Keep and its medieval gatehouse the Black Gate are open daily and host a range of special events. This was no baron's stately home. The Castle was a grim symbol of royal authority where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed. Explore the ancient passageways and chambers; discover the hidden stories of its inhabitants, and take in the impressive views from the rooftop across the city and the River Tyne.
