Happy New Year to everyone, we hope you are feeling fine!
Happy New Year all!

To kick off the new year, our friends over at North East Heritage Library have set up a World Cup of North East Heritage on Twitter whereby the winner of each 'match' is determined by the number of votes it receives. Segedunum made it to the semi-finals yesterday and today we're playing for third place.

So if you do Twitter, please head over to North East Heritage Library @neheritagelib

https://twitter.com/neheritagelib/status/1346414640952053760

and vote for Segedunum - we're up against the Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel. The poll opened at noon today and it closes at 8pm tonight.

“It's FINAL day! 👏 Tynemouth Priory is up against the Swing Bridge in the last head to head, and to take the crown! Third Place will be listed at the same time. Same rules, 8 hours from 12pm. Will you choose the three kings, or one of Newcastle's greatest industrialists?”

We are not able to confirm a specific opening date yet, but we are currently planning to reopen in the autumn.

We’re making sure we have everything in place so that when you visit it is as safe and enjoyable as possible and as soon as our opening date is confirmed we will share this with you.

We intend to reintroduce some services, including copying and paid research, in the next few weeks and will provide additional information as soon as we are able.

In the meantime, we hope you’re enjoying our digital content on our website and social media. Thank you for your continued support.

Did you know Lucozade was invented in Newcastle?

In 1927 a chemist named William Owen invented a drink called Glucozade in his shop in Barras Bridge, Newcastle. The glucose drink was designed to give energy to sick people recovering from illnesses such as colds or flu. The name changed to Lucozade in 1929 then Beechams bought it in 1938.

It was used by hospitals throughout Britain and became a symbol of recovery.

In the 1980s it was re-branded as a sports energy drink rather than a brand associated with illness; and some people swear by it as a good 'hangover' drink too.

So thrilled and delighted to share the news that Joe, one of our volunteers at Stephenson Steam Railway, has been nominated for the Museums & Heritage Volunteer of the Year Award! He absolutely deserves it!

https://www.facebook.com/132709303472162/posts/3061875257222204/

We are absolutely thrilled that Joe Stuart, one of our youngest volunteers, has been shortlisted for the Museums & Heritage Volunteer of the Year award.

Interested in locomotives from a young age, Joe qualified as a fireman at 16, becoming one of the youngest to do so in the UK. Alongside working on the railway, he also helps in the workshops. Last year, Joe was instrumental in organising the railway’s first Diesel Gala, a hugely successful weekend event featuring a variety of diesel locomotives and an intensive timetable of passenger and freight trains.

Congratulations on making the final Joe! The winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony on 22 September. Fingers crossed! Thehttps://awards.museumsandheritage.com/shortlist-2020/

·Thank you Stephenson Steam Railway Volunteers.
You are superb in every way. Its great we have such passion and skills working with us.
This is from David at SSR (Stephenson Steam Railway)

This week is National Volunteers’ Week, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers at Stephenson Steam Railway for their hard work, dedication and commitment. We have an incredibly passionate team of volunteers here who regularly give up many hours of their time to ensure the success and development of the railway.
Our volunteers are at the forefront of everything we do, from running passenger trains, behind-the-scenes engine restoration, supporting events and, more recently, ensuring essential maintenance is carried out to keep the engines ticking over while we wait to open our doors again when it’s safe to do so.
We’ve achieved a lot together in the past 12 months, notably a very smooth running season with no engine failures or breakdowns, the successful debut of Loco 401 Vulcan, and a very popular Diesel Gala, all of which wouldn’t have been possible without the help of all our volunteers. As we look ahead to the next 12 months, which will be an uncertain time for everybody, one thing I am confident of is our volunteers’ ability and dedication to help see us through what will certainly be a difficult and unusual time as we navigate the reopening of the museum in the safest possible way.
